Who said learning and serving has an age limit?
At SPBC, our Chaplaincy programme is not just for young people - in fact, many of our students bring years of life experience, wisdom, and faith into their studies.
We believe the older generation is a vital part of the Church and community. Your stories matter. Your experiences matter. Your voice matters.
Chaplaincy is an opportunity to use everything you have walked through to encourage, support, and walk alongside others.
Your journey is not finished - there are still people who need what you carry. ✨

Meet John
He is our Program Manager here at SPBC.
We'd thought that you may want to get to know us better.
"My favourite class to teach has been the book of Hebrews. I find the author's defence of Jesus as the fulfilment of everything in the Old Testament really comforting and compelling. I love how he urges believers to persevere and to grow in their faith, knowing that Jesus is the better messenger, the better Moses, the better sacrifice, and so on. Hebrews is the kind of book that sits on your shelf unread for years, but when you finally open it up you realise you had a great treasure waiting for you all along.
I generally enjoy exploring New Testament theology as a subject, but in the last few years it became specifically about work and rest. The rhythms that God requires His people to keep between the two are better than what we come up with ourselves. Too many of us obsess about holidays, retirement, and lunch breaks, forgetting that we were made with wonderful gifts to put to use to make the world a better place. And too many of us on the other side obsess about productivity, investments, and legacy, forgetting that we were made to build friendships and families and to find our value in God's view of us rather than what people think. Making a mess of this work-rest rhythm, we find new ways to make our lives a torment of money, power, shirking responsibility, and unhealthy relationships.
I don't really have any handy quotes or phrases I'm known to use. The closest would be my old classes on New Testament Theology where we would start each topic with an ancient heresy. My students enjoyed seeing the slide and hearing me say it out loud: "Blasphemy!" That doesn't make for a good poster though
Regarding facts about me, I enjoy spending time with people, whether it's at church on Sunday, in our home for a meal, or in the classroom to help them improve. My hobbies include videogames, movies, and books. I have a wife, a boy, and a girl, all of whom I love spending time with. And I come from Australia originally but also have American citizenship but now live in New Zealand. So, I have no home"

Our Exodus class was full of deep conversations, thoughtful questions, and fresh insight 📖🔥
From exploring how the book points to God’s presence among His people, to discussing how the wilderness is often where God shapes and forms us - there was so much richness in the room.
One question that really stood out was: what does “the road out” mean for us today?
And honestly, it sparked such powerful discussion about faith, growth, and the journey God leads us on.
Moments like these remind us that studying Scripture isn’t just about learning information - it’s about being transformed by it. 🙌
