NZBarok are an amazing string ensemble - they play on 18th century instruments with baroque bows and gut strings. It’s such a unique sound and way of playing.
This revered masterpiece, composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741, remains one of the most significant works in the Baroque choral canon. Known for its powerful and uplifting oratorio structure, Messiah features profound scriptural texts, with its most famous segment, the “Hallelujah” chorus, transcending centuries as a symbol of joy and spiritual triumph.

Today we enjoyed a triple Graduation concert! Well done to Keziah on successfully completing and performing her Book 1 Graduation and Rhea and Abby with their Book 3 graduations. Next up - pianist Esha Xu

Esha is a Year 7 student at Bethlehem College who began learning piano at age five and now also learns violin, viola, harpsichord, and trumpet. Esha has won many awards and scholarships at Performing Arts competitions and in 2023, won the BOP IRMT Piano Senior Scholarship.
Esha performed as a viola soloist and harpsichord accompanist with the Tauranga Youth Chamber Ensemble at Baycourt Art Center in July 2024. She also sings in her school choir, plays in school orchestras and is a member of both the Youth Philharmonic Tauranga and the Tauranga City Brass Auxiliary band. Music plays a vital role in Esha’s life and she aspires to continue expanding her musical experience into the future.

Esha will perform the first movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23.

Meet Elisha Tie, who will join Jasper as the other soloist in Vivaldi's Double Concerto for two violins!

Elisha is 13 years old and is in Year 9 at Bethlehem College. She has been learning violin with her teacher, Anneli Ahlers for 6 years. Earlier this year, Elisha had the opportunity to travel to Germany to perform in an orchestra alongside Jasper, Esha, and her brother Ephraim.
Elisha plays first violin in the Youth Philharmonic Tauranga (YPT) and is an active member of her school’s music department, participating in the orchestra, string group, string quartet, and singing soprano in the school choir, Sound Collective.
When she doesn't play music, Elisha enjoys drawing and playing table tennis.

Over the coming days, we'll introduce you to all our Rising Stars finalists.

Jasper Zhang is 12 years old, and in year 7 at Bethlehem college.
He has been playing violin for six years under the guidance of Anneli Ahlers.
Last year, Anneli organised a workshop and a Baroque concert where Jasper had the opportunity to perform as soloist in different Vivaldi concertos under direction of Japanese Baroque specialist, Naotaka Maejima.
Jasper also plays in the Bethlehem College string orchestra as well as a chamber music quartet.
When not playing violin, Jasper likes to play Basketball and plays for Bethlehem College intermediate A team.

Jasper will perform the 1st and 3rd movement of Vivaldi's double concerto for 2 violins together with Elisha Tie, whom we will introduce tomorrow :-)
