Our tamariki have been absolutely captivated by the pūrākau "The Battle of the Mountains!"

We’ve been reading the wonderful version by Peter Gossage, learning all about how the great mountains of the Central Plateau—Tongariro, Taranaki, Tauhara, and Putauaki—fought for the love of the beautiful Pīhanga in an epic battle that resulted in Mt Taranaki moving west, creating the Whanganui River in his move.

To take our learning deeper and explore our awesome imagination, we decided to create our very own "Battle of the Mountains" scene box! 📦

And although it was magical to see our tamariki working skills well together, the real magic came to life once it was all dry and they engaged in recreating the pūrakau with their friends, showing that knowledge and learning is at its best when it is shared!

Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi!
With your food basket, and my food basket, the people will thrive!

Here at the Children's Garden, we encourage our tamariki to lead their own learning journeys, and to also lead the learning of their younger friends. Check out one of our older tamariki using her tuakana-teina skills and setting up the learning space for our younger children for next week...

Kia kaha te reo Māori! ✨This week for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, The Children’s Garden is full of chatter, waiata, and exploration! 🌿🎶 We are loving finding fun, creative ways to naturally weave te reo into our daily play and learning.Watch this space to see what our clever tamariki get up to! 📸👇

Here are some of the fun set ups we have here for the children to get engaged with ✨😁

The children enjoy using the sandpit and making all sorts of different kinds of “food” or “drinks” for us to try. 👀

We have a garden that we can use for our resources which include rosemary, mint and lavender which the children enjoy using and smelling.

Paint is always fun to use with different resources such as our animal toy collection, car and truck set.

We enjoy using our blocks and sometimes add our natural resources to it to extend a child’s learning + imagination. 👍🏻

Here’s some of the fun things we do here at the Victory street infants and toddler centre -

You will notice a few photos are of the children painting. This is always a fun experience as it gets the children to use their imaginations , sensory benefit by feeling the paint on their fingers and learning about different colours and when you mix them together 🎨.

Sand pit play is a fun way to focus on our scooping and pouring skills. Also fun to add other resources to the sand such as our dinosaur display. 🦕

It is starting to warm up so we get the water play out , this is always a fun time and the children love getting soaked and seeing what they can do with water 💦

We also enjoy block play and this helps with our counting skills , seeing how to balance different sized blocks and again noticing different colours. 🟪🟨🟩

"Here at our Pamir Centre we have been building and creating lots of Volcanoes in the sand pit. So today, we took the chemical reaction to the table, experimenting cause and effect through making our own mini Volcanoes"
