MULTI-COLOURED SPHERE SIGHTED IN NZ
Many people new to the UFO/UAP subject tend to think orbs and spheres are a more recent occurrence in our skies, however most long-time UFO sighting investigators have archival records of these sightings dating back decades, or from witnesses who have waited years to report them now, in the current more open ‘climate’ of the subject.
Yesterday I received an historic report from an 80-year-old woman, ‘Anna’, who had an extraordinary sighting in 1959, near Christchurch, South Island, NZ, when she was 14 years old. She and her mother were driving home from the Cashmere Hills area just south of Christchurch one evening, having visited friends.
While in the foothills she observed a massive bright white sphere in the sky, so big she at first assumed it was the moon and watched it for a few minutes while her mother concentrated on driving. The idea she was looking at the moon quickly vanished when they both observed a multitude of bright colours emanating from, or on the surface of the sphere. It was descending from the east, moving inland from over the sea, towards them.
Anna described it as being so enormous that she feared it was going to crash and it would ‘wipe out a huge area’. She impressed this upon me, saying I couldn’t possibly imagine how big it was. Her mother stopped the car on the side of the road and Anna described how the sphere seemed to ‘fill the windscreen’ even though it was still above the height of the foothills. The sphere slowly veered to their right, clearing the top of the Cashmere Hills and continuing south out of view. She described how she and her mother had mixed feelings of trepidation, curiosity, relief and fear all rolled into one.
Neither of them talked about the sighting to anyone for fear of ridicule and ostracization, but they believed many other people would have seen it and that the event would feature on radio and in the newspapers, however nothing was ever publicized. Their sighting occurred later in 1959, after the phenomenal ‘Moreland’ sighting of July 13, 1959, and Anna has considered it possible that the MOD/govt at the time may have prevented reporting of UFO events in the media, at least in the public aftermath of the Moreland event (a UFO landing on a farm, with visible occupants).
Historic sightings are like gold, offering us insights not only into UFO technology, but also into the public psyche and the long-term effect on the witnesses and their lives.
