A little behind the scenes of making our colanders.
Lots of shaping, smoothing, poking holes and a couple of firings later ~ the finished pieces are ready for the kitchen.
Here in our Tauranga studio we handcraft beautiful, functional ceramics to make everyday rituals more joyful.

It’s a pretty cold winter’s day today, but luckily my studio faces the sun, so it warms up quickly and is filled with the best natural light,
I’ve spent the day hand-painting vases for CLAY at Tauranga Art Gallery, and it’s been one of those satisfying studio days. There’s something so nice about putting a podcast on, settling in and giving each piece the time it deserves - until it’s time for school pick up.
Looking forward to seeing these pieces out in the world soon.

This piece was originally designed for kitchen utensils, but we’ve always loved seeing it filled with flowers, or just sitting pretty on your shelf.
As JS Ceramics continues to evolve, so is our colour collection. Pink sand is being retired to make way for whats’s next ~ so these will be the last available.
Thank you to everyone who has loved pink sand over the years! x

Our original mug design and still a favourite.
Handmade in Matua from our own clay/porcelain mix. We’ve left part of the exterior unglazed, revealing the texture and specks of foraged Coromandel sand that makes every mug unique.
Made to be an everyday fav. x

A little kiln magic. Swipe for before and after.
The first photo shows these mugs freshly glazed, the second is the finished result after firing to temperature.
It’s always amazing to see how much changes in the process, the glaze develops its true colour and finish, and the clay shrinks as it matures in the kiln.
Kiln openings are always the exciting bit of the job!

Our handcrafted small plate is a useful little thing ~ pair it with one of our mugs and add your favourite biscuit, or it could be a spot for treasured little bits and pieces.
Each dish is handmade from our sandy oatmeal clay and finished in a soft satin glaze, the bottom is unglazed ~ revealing the texture of the clay and speckles of coromandel sand. 15x1.5cm. As always, very limited numbers available. x

A week away with all the family = cup filled. Now’s it’s back to chilly mornings in the studio, but I’m excited to get stuck in. Today’s first job was getting a bisque kiln on then making a batch of sage products. For all those that have been in touch about the sage butter dishes - they are underway! x
