What an incredible day of learning at St Mary’s today!
Our Year 5 and 6 students have been bringing their learning about the Seven Wonders of the World to life, with a very special experience right here on our own backfield.
As part of their mathematics learning, our Year 5 and 6 students worked out the scale required to recreate the dimensions of Christ the Redeemer. Today, the whole school - almost 500 students and staff - had the opportunity to stand inside the full-scale outline of Rio de Janeiro’s iconic statue!
This learning has been a key focus of our senior school literacy programme this term, with mathematics, technology and social sciences supporting and extending the learning. As a Catholic school, students have also been exploring the meaning behind the name The Redeemer and how the statue’s open arms, forming a cross, represent faith, welcome, peace and protection.
A huge thank you to Mrs Willemse for organising this incredible experience, Mr Warnock for painting the field and capturing fantastic drone footage, Brian Askin for measuring the outline of the field and helping the project to take shape and Kim for helping with the art today.
