Rongoā Māori is an expression of a very different way of seeing the world. Te Āo Māori doesn’t see humans as masters of the universe entitled to whatever the planet is able to provide. Rather this worldview is based on a sense of belonging, of connection. For Māori, wellness depends not on how much they possess, but on the strength of the network of connections that gives them the sense of identity that is essential for their well-being.

That is very different to a world which is too often measured by the level of wealth one is able to accrue. The separation of Māori from their whenua did more than deprive them of economic opportunities; it separated them from the very source of who they were and where they belonged.

Inside Northland floods: Through the eyes of Ōakura residents "Devastation" and "tragedy" are how one resident has described scenes at the beachside settlement after damaging floods.
