S is for… SUPER BUSY!

What a wonderfully busy week we’ve had exploring the letter S — in fact, we were having so much fun that we almost forgot it was Friday! 😂

Our tamariki have been immersed in all things S, learning about sharks and snakes, creating some very cute sheep, and getting wonderfully messy with string painting, sand painting and salt painting.

Through these experiences, our tamariki have been strengthening their fine-motor skills, experimenting with different textures and techniques, building their vocabulary and making connections between the letter S, its sound, and the world around them.

We love seeing the concentration, creativity and pride that comes with each creation — and, as always, no two masterpieces are ever quite the same. ❤️

Another week full of learning, laughter, creativity and VERY busy little hands at Maungatapu Preschool.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori meets the Letter R! ❤️m

What a beautiful week of learning, creating and celebrating at Maungatapu Preschool! Alongside exploring our Letter R, our tamariki celebrated Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, with te reo Māori and tikanga woven throughout our experiences.

Our tamariki made parāoa parai (fry bread), created their own marae and special pounamu, explored raranga (weaving) and made their very own rainmakers. 🌧️🎶 We also had plenty of Letter R fun creating rivers, roads and getting stuck into some wonderfully RED messy play!

These experiences gave our tamariki opportunities to create, problem-solve, work alongside one another and build their understanding of te ao Māori in meaningful, hands-on ways.

While Te Wiki o te Reo Māori gives us a special opportunity to celebrate our beautiful language, we are incredibly fortunate to have kaiako who authentically weave te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori throughout our everyday practice — not just for one week, but ia rā, ia rā – every day.

Swimming is about so much more than learning strokes. Our tamariki are developing water confidence, coordination, strength, perseverance and trust, all while learning important skills that help keep them safe around water.

We especially love seeing those moments when “I’m not sure…” becomes “I DID IT!”

A huge ngā mihi to our wonderful swimming instructor for supporting each tamaiti at their own pace, celebrating their successes and making every lesson fun and positive.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori | Māori Language Week

He tino ātaahua tēnei! What an incredible invitation to explore our Atua Māori through sensory play, storytelling, colour, texture and discovery.

Our tamariki were able to get their hands right into this beautiful tray, exploring the different environments and learning about atua such as Tangaroa, Tāne Mahuta, Tāwhirimātea and Rongomātāne. Through play like this, our pēpi and tamariki are beginning to make connections with te ao Māori, the natural world and the stories and knowledge of Aotearoa.

This week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori – Māori Language Week, a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and strengthen the use of te reo Māori. However, here at Maungatapu Preschool, we feel incredibly fortunate to have kaiako who understand that te reo Māori me ōna tikanga are not something we bring out for one special week — they are part of who we are and how we practise every day.

From our mihi and waiata, to our everyday kupu, pūrākau, tikanga, experiences and the way we nurture relationships with our tamariki and whānau, our kaiako continue to weave te reo Māori and te ao Māori authentically throughout our kaupapa.

He hononga ki tō tātou hapori | Connecting with our local community

Today some of our tamariki had the special opportunity to visit our local kura and watch their kapa haka rehearsal as they prepare to perform at Rā Whakangahau this Friday.

Our tamariki sat beautifully, completely captivated by the waiata, haka and poi. They were even lucky enough to have a little hands-on experience with the poi themselves!

These experiences are about so much more than a trip beyond our preschool gates. They are about whanaungatanga — building meaningful relationships and strengthening our connections with the people, places and culture within our local hapori. They also help our tamariki become familiar with their local kura and see older tamariki proudly sharing te reo Māori me ōna tikanga.

A huge ngā mihi nui to the tauira and kaiako for welcoming us into your space and sharing your rehearsal with us. We loved being part of it and wish you all the very best for Friday — kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui!

Q & R have been keeping us busy at Maungatapu Preschool this week!

What a fun-filled week of learning as our tamariki explored the letters Q & R through lots of hands-on creativity and play!

We blasted off with colourful rockets 🚀, created beautiful rainbows 🌈, built reptile farms 🦎, zoomed around our racing roads 🏎️ and even got busy in our new Preschool Pantry making delicious quesadillas!

So much learning happens through these experiences — creativity, language, fine-motor skills, problem solving and, most importantly, lots of fun alongside our friends.

Quesadillas, rockets, rainbows, reptiles and racing… what a week! ❤️

Introducing our Preschool Pantry!

We are very excited to introduce our new “Preschool Pantry” — an idea that has grown from the interests of our tamariki and their absolute love of cooking, creating and helping in the kitchen! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Every two weeks, our little chefs will have opportunities to get hands-on with kai — following simple recipes, exploring new ingredients, measuring, mixing, spreading, chopping and, of course, enjoying the delicious results!

This will tie in with our letter of the week. This week “Preschool Pantry” tied in perfectly with our Letter of the Week – Q, so what better way to begin than with Q for Quesadillas! 🥙

Our tamariki carefully chose their fillings, spread and sprinkled their ingredients, folded their quesadillas and watched as they were cooked until warm and delicious. Even our littlest Pēpi got involved — and judging by those faces, the taste testing was definitely a success! 😋

There is so much learning happening through cooking — building independence and confidence, developing fine motor skills, learning about healthy kai, following instructions and working alongside one another. Most importantly, it gives our tamariki the opportunity to see their own ideas and interests become part of our curriculum.

He taonga te ako tahi — learning together is a treasure.

R is for ROBOTS! 🤖

Our tamariki had an absolute blast today bringing the letter R to life by designing and creating their very own robots!

Using boxes, foil, pipe cleaners, pom-poms, googly eyes and plenty of imagination, each tamaiti created a robot that was completely unique. We loved watching their ideas develop as they carefully chose their materials, experimented with where everything should go and proudly showed off their finished creations. 🤖

Activities like this are so much more than just having fun! Through mahi toi (creative arts) our tamariki are developing their fine-motor skills, problem-solving, decision-making and confidence, while having the freedom to express their own whakaaro (ideas).

He rawe tō mahi, tamariki mā – amazing work! We think our little robot makers absolutely nailed R for Robots! 🤖
