Our next PINK People’s Choice Award artist for 2026 needs no introduction — Tauranga artist Shona Mackenzie!

Shona’s semi-abstract work is heavily influenced by the beauty of the natural world and her deep connection to the lands of her two homes — New Zealand and Scotland.

We can’t wait to see what Shona has created for her award piece! Come and see it for yourself at Mercury Baypark from 28–30 August — and you may even be lucky enough to catch Shona doing one of her wonderful demonstrations!

This weekend these 3 works will be at the Baradene Art Show 2026. Gutted I won’t be able to make it to opening night this year. If you are in Auckland it’s really worth a visit as it’s a fabulous Show. Head to Baradene Art Show for all the details. The catalogue is now available to view on their website.

I always said I’d never indulge in the viral stuff but sometimes needs must…

This is not a throwaway line, but would you like to throw away a night at the launch of the Tauranga Art Show?

It is on my birthday the 28th of August. If you want to, please do cement (or dag or chare) if you get my drift, as to why you should be there.

Don’t pass up a double pass. Get writing on the double and I can single you out as the winna-winna, chicken dinner.
You can frame your cement however you like. (See what I did there?) 😂
Btw this big piece should be finished in time for the big night!

The Horizon Of Our Borrowed Hours is a work that speaks to time passing, storms brewing and the pull to return home. If you are in Auckland and you are keen to see her in person (or maybe even want to make her yours) make sure you head to the Baradene Art Show at the end of this month.
Framed in a natural, wax sealed tray fray, 628mm square.

I have been slack as with the socials lately but so not slack with the real stuff! The last 6 weeks I’ve been painting up a storm getting ready for this weekend’s Auckland Art Show. Opening tonight Friday the 31st and on all day tomorrow and Sunday.
For those not in Auckland this broody piece is Of Loss And Reclamation. 7100mm square framed in a light beeswaxed cradle frame.

If you are a fellow artist follower especially if you are in the Bay Of Plenty, this is for you. Have you applied for The Tauranga Art Show yet? It is the very first time Art Shows Across Aotearoa have come to Tauranga and if you’ve never done a big art show this could be the one to try. Still wondering… DM me I’m happy to answer questions. Applications closing soon, don’t think for too long!

New beginnings…
I haven’t posted in ages as for the first time in my painting career I had a few weeks of serious self doubt. I’m not talking about one of those imposter syndrome moments or even one of those ‘I can’t paint!’ weeks. This was much deeper and prompted by a number of external events and perpetuated by the feelings that these things stirred up. Had I lost my voice? Is what I have to say still relevant? What next and how do I get there?
I am very pleased to say that a couple of weeks out of the studio, days spent giving my much neglected garden a winter clean up have brought me back to myself. I quite literally needed some physical grounding. Time to think deeply about my practice and motivation was hugely beneficial as were the fabulous conversations with my wonderful artist friends. Finally a bit of a sort out in the studio and some sketchbook work got me back into the swing of things.
Good thing too as surprise, surprise I have deadlines approaching!
I’m excited to see where these works end up.
Anyway the whole point of me posting about this wee crisis of mine is to say yay, I’m out the other side! But also if you are going through something similar, give yourself some grace and time and refill that creative cup. None of us can’t create on empty.
