Would you eat plastic cookies?
Scientists working on a project funded by the space agency Nasa have found a way to turn plastic and other waste into cookies that could one day feed astronauts. The technology turns plastics and leftover farm waste into edible proteins, fats and flavourings. These are then put through a 3D printer, which shapes them into a disc, just like a cookie. The cookies haven’t been approved for people to eat yet, but the scientists behind them say they smell great. Right now, the cookies are expensive to make, costing $60 for every kilogram, about £44. The team hopes they can bring […]

Ice legends launch new team skating event
British ice dance champions Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean have launched a brand-new figure skating event at the very rink where they first started skating together as teenagers. Torvill and Dean are best known for winning Olympic gold at the 1984 Sarajevo Games with their famous “Bolero” routine. They also won four world titles during their long partnership. Their new event, called the Synchro9 World Championships, was launched this week at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena in England. Unlike traditional synchronised skating, which uses teams of 16 skaters, Synchro9 features smaller teams of nine skaters competing head-to-head in knockout rounds, a bit like […]

Colourful Wool Art Takes Over Christchurch
Christchurch’s Cathedral Square has been turned into a giant outdoor gallery of wool art, after the city’s yarn bombing festival Yarnarchy kicked off on 20 September 2026. Yarn bombing is when knitted or crocheted material is used to brighten up public spaces, like lamp posts, benches or statues, instead of paint. The free festival will run until 18 October 2026, filling the square with wild crochet and knitted installations made by local craftspeople. Some of the artworks are made by just one person, while others are built from hundreds of individual pieces stitched together by different crafters. Yarnarchy is led by […]

Black Ferns thrash Scotland to stay unbeaten
The Black Ferns have crushed Scotland 66-14 in Edinburgh, keeping their perfect record alive in the WXV Global Series. New Zealand raced away early, with Mo’omo’oga Palu scoring just two minutes into the match. By half-time, the Black Ferns already led 38-14, after six different players had crossed the try line in the first 40 minutes alone. Fullback Braxton Sorensen-McGee had a strong night with the boot, converting seven out of nine kicks at goal. It wasn’t all one-way traffic, though. Scotland’s Evie Gallagher made history, becoming the first player ever to score a try against the Black Ferns in four […]

Runaway Horse Leads Police Chase in the US
A horse gave police in Santa Fe, in the United States, quite the workout after it escaped just before a parade was due to start. The horse bolted before the Desfile de La Gente parade began on Sunday, 20 September 2026, forcing the Santa Fe Police Department into action. Officers on motorcycles and bicycles, animal services staff, and even a drone operator all joined the search. A group of local cowboys also helped chase the runaway horse down. The horse was finally cornered and caught on Canyon Road. Its owner arrived to collect it, and the horse was walked back to […]

Hubble Telescope spots a Topsy-Turvy Galaxy
NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has spotted a strange, mixed-up galaxy that is spinning in two different directions at once. The galaxy, called NGC 4698, sits about 55 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, so this galaxy is extremely far from Earth. What makes NGC 4698 so unusual is that the stars and gas near its centre rotate perpendicular, or side-on, to the rest of the galaxy’s disk. Its spiral arms also only appear in the outer parts of the galaxy, forming a ring shape, instead of stretching all the way […]

Kiwi Runner Sam Tanner smashes NZ Mile record
New Zealand runner Sam Tanner has broken the national road mile record at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 26-year-old crossed the line in 3 minutes 56.01 seconds, finishing 12th in the race, but still smashing the previous New Zealand record of 3:58.45, which had been set by Geordie Beamish in Hawaii in 2025. Tanner was the top-finishing New Zealander in the morning session of racing. The race itself was won by Germany’s Robert Farken, who crossed the line in 3:51.80. Australia’s Oliver H***e also had a big day, breaking the Oceania road mile record with a time […]

Robots being Built to Sign for Deaf Māori
Researchers at the University of Auckland are building humanoid robots that can use sign language, to help Deaf Māori, or Turi Māori, connect with te ao Māori, the Māori world. The robots come in three sizes, adult height, primary school size, and early childhood size, and can communicate through sign, text, and spoken language. The project is led by robotics researcher Dr Ho Seok Ahn and language researcher Dr Tauwehe Tamati. Dr Tamati explained why the project matters to her. “It was always about: what does a language do to support your identity if you can’t hear it?” she said. The […]

Tiny Black Robin Named Bird of the Year 2026
A small, shy native bird called the black robin, or karure, has won New Zealand’s Bird of the Year competition for 2026. The result was announced by conservation group Forest & Bird, after a record 98,920 validated votes were cast. This year, 88 percent of votes came from inside New Zealand, a big change from 2023, when most votes came from overseas. The black robin beat some famous rivals to take the crown. The kākāpō came second, the New Zealand falcon came third, and the kea and takahē tied for fifth place. Forest & Bird’s Rebecca Hatch said people had turned […]

Family Sets World Record For Shared Birthday
An Iowa family in the United States has set a new world record, after five generations were all born on exactly the same day. Guinness World Records confirmed the Harlow family holds the record for the most generations born on one date — 14 September. Fred Harlow shares his birthday with his grandfather Wilbur, his mother Addie, his daughter Emma Bell, and his grandson Arthur. “We always thought it was pretty cool, but we never really thought much of it as far as record holder,” Harlow said. Emma Bell said the family only decided to make it official after her second […]
