Discovering Joy Beyond Work: My K-Culture Journey
For almost three years, watching K-dramas has not only been my escape, it was my sanity-saver. Through exciting plots of action, drama, and comedy, I’m transported into a world that's very different from Hollywood’s often predictable narratives. Honestly, it’s a refreshing lens—a break from the grind, where relaxing and pursuing a hobby doesn’t need to “tick a box” for productivity as what we usually hear from experts.
My new passion opened new doors. I began exploring Korean cuisine, trying out cooking kimchi pancakes and japchae noodles at home and occasionally hunting down authentic restaurants in town with my wife. It also connected me to incredible people who share this fascination, enriching my social circle. Too, I eventually added Korean soundtracks on my Spotify and, you know it, Kpop songs (D. O. is my all time favourite).
Perhaps the most unexpected outcome here? Learning Korean (Hangeul) —my first experience with a writing system outside the alphabet! Who would know? Now this one is a game-changer!
Passions like this remind me of a truth that I’ve recently learned: your hobbies don’t need to make money to matter. Sometimes, they’re simply there to bring you joy. And that’s enough.
How about you? Have you discovered K-culture yet? What’s your joy beyond work?
The Power of Social and Spiritual Rest 🏖️
As an expat, life often pulls us between different worlds. Rest, travel, and reconnecting to your roots become vital for recharging, both emotionally and spiritually. This trip to the Philippines reminded me of the seven types of rest, especially social rest—the kind that comes from meaningful moments with loved ones.
Revisiting childhood places with my family, indulging in ube cake, pancit, and laing, and sharing laughter over old stories weren’t just nostalgic—they were grounding. For expats, reconnecting with your roots can strengthen your sense of identity, bringing clarity and balance to the often unstable nature of living abroad.
On the other hand, our short getaway to Boracay Island offered sensory and spiritual rest. Morning runs, warm swims, and romantic sunsets reminded me of life’s simplicity and beauty. Rest like this is essential for all of us—it replenishes energy, enhances resilience, and helps us become more creative and productive in our workplaces.
How do you stay connected to your roots? 🌏
🌴 Reflections from my recent trip 🎶
I recently had the privilege of performing at Rise Up, a fundraising concert in the Philippines, where I sang some inspiring songs and hits from the ‘90s. The experience was a reminder of how finding “creative and spiritual rest” can recharge your soul.
In our fast-paced, work-centred culture, it’s easy to lose ourselves in the grind. But as I’ve learned, tying your identity solely to work can be detrimental. What happens when work is gone, or goals shift? This idea resonates deeply with Simone Stolzoff’s The Good Enough Job, where he writes, “We are more than what we do for a living.”
For me, singing has always been a way to reconnect with my passions and remind myself of who I am beyond the workplace. What’s your “creative rest”? How do you nurture your identity outside of work?
Let’s rise up, rest, and rediscover ourselves. 🫰
Do you want to get a company's attention even if you lack experience? 🤔
Use your transferrable skills.
Some skills can be learned, while others are a part of who you are from personal and work-related experiences.
These are the top 3 transferrable skills companies look for:
1. Analytical reasoning 💭
Expats naturally have this skill because living in a new country means you'll often experience unpredictable situations, break down problems, and solve them to thrive.
2. Adaptability🤹
As expats, we know what it means to adapt to new situations.
Moving to a new country will teach you how to constantly adjust, learn new things, and make them work in your favor.
3. Teamwork 🤝
This skill may be a challenge for expats because many are still getting familiar with the culture.
But your willingness to be open to a new environment and explore it will place you in an advantage. 🙌
