A year ago this young lady , Zeynep Goekce came to Taumarunui High School, she actually wanted to go to a city school and was hoping for a transfer. Instead she extended her stay at our school and didn’t want to go home. What she said about our school community and our students was so moving it made me cry. This is the conclusion if her narrative of her stay:
Before this year, I believed school, academics, achievements, and activities were the most important things. I chased goals, not people. I thought success meant doing things, not connecting with people. But now I understand something completely different:
All the activities, all the plans, all the achievements in the world mean nothing if you don’t have the right people beside you. Real Family isn’t just the people you were born to. It’s the people who sit with you when you’re tired, who laugh with you until you can’t breathe, who make ordinary days feel unforgettable.
This year, my host family and my friends became my home. They taught me so much about life, about kindness, about courage, about connection. I am forever grateful for them. I would trade every trip I took, every activity, every experience... just for a few more days with my whanau. That’s how much they changed me. That’s how much I love them.
This year taught me how fragile and beautiful connection is.
It taught me that letting people in might hurt later, but not letting them in hurts more.
It taught me that home is not a place it’s the people who make you feel loved, safe, understood, and wanted.
In the future, I want to carry everything I’ve learned about love, gratitude, courage, and vulnerability into every part of my life. Even if I never get this exact life back, I will always carry the people who made it so unforgettable, and I will always carry the people that made it so unforgettable and I will always be grateful to them for everything they taught me.

Moritz Marton also left us last term. He originally came for one term but loved his stay so much he extended his stay to two terms. This is what he had to say about his stay in Taumarunui.
My six months in New Zealand as an exchange student were a wonderful and unforgettable experience. During this time, I not only improved my English but also gained many new impressions and got to know a different culture.
The time with my host family was especially lovely. They welcomed me warmly and made me feel at home quickly. Thanks to them, I was able to experience everyday life in New Zealand and enjoy many special moments.
Another important part of my stay was Taumarunui High School. I received a warm welcome there and made many new friends. I enjoyed school life, and it was interesting to experience a different school system. The teachers and classmates were very open and helpful, which made me feel integrated quickly.
Overall, my time abroad in New Zealand was a fantastic experience that helped me grow personally. The time I spent with my host family and friends, the experiences at Taumarunui High School, and the many excursions made my six months there truly special. I am very grateful for this opportunity and will cherish the many wonderful memories for a long time to come.

Ruben Voss went home last term after a year staying with his wonderful host family. He had such a wonderful time these are some of the things he had to say about his stay with Taumarunui High School:

It was a year full of new adventures, personal growth, unforgettable memories, and amazing people who became like family to me. Looking back, I can honestly say that this experience changed me in many positive ways and helped me become more independent, confident, and open-minded.
Starting at a new school in a different country was challenging at first, but the students and teachers made me feel welcome from the beginning. I had the opportunity to experience a different education system, make new friends, and become part of the local community. Taumarunui High School was much more than just a place to study—it became a second home where I created memories that I will never forget. However, the most important part of my exchange year was not the activities—it was the people.
My host family became one of the biggest reasons why this experience was so meaningful. My host sister, Sam, my host mother, Rachel, and my host father, John, welcomed me into their lives from the very first day.
Living on the farm was a completely new experience for me and something I will always treasure. I learned so much about rural New Zealand life and enjoyed being surrounded by nature every day.
I arrived in New Zealand as an exchange student, but I left with a second family, lifelong friendships, and memories that will stay with me forever. It was truly the best time of my life, and I will always be thankful for every moment of it.
