🌿 Research Spotlight | Aimey Tahu 🌿

This week, we're excited to feature Aimey Tahu and her research on Determining Hawke's Bay Seagrass Distribution Using Drone Image Supervised Classification.

Seagrass meadows are among the world's most important coastal ecosystems. They provide habitat for marine life, improve water quality, store significant amounts of carbon, and help protect our coastlines. Unfortunately, they are disappearing at an estimated 1–5% each year, while many seagrass meadows around the world remain unmapped.

In New Zealand, there is still limited information on the distribution of our native seagrass, Zostera muelleri, particularly in Hawke's Bay.

Using high-resolution drone imagery and ArcGIS, Aimey mapped seagrass meadows through supervised image classification and validated the results with ground-truthing. Her research produced detailed maps showing the distribution of seagrass across Hawke's Bay, providing valuable information to support future monitoring, conservation, restoration, and coastal management.

From Classroom to Discovery: EIT Students Uncover the Hidden Life of the Rare Banded Kōkopu

At the Environmental Studies degree programme at EIT , Napier, learning goes far beyond the classroom. Our second-year Freshwater Ecology course combines cutting-edge science with real-world field experience, allowing students to contribute to genuine ecological research.

As part of the course, Dr Dinusha Jayathilake introduced environmental DNA (eDNA) technology to students, giving them hands-on experience with one of the newest and most powerful biodiversity monitoring techniques used by scientists worldwide.

Each year, students collect water samples from freshwater ecosystems around Napier, including the Tūtaekurī River, Pūrimu Stream, Anderson Park Pond, Fish & Game ponds, and the Waitangi Wetland. These samples are analysed using eDNA to detect species that may otherwise remain hidden.

What began as a practical exercise soon developed into an exciting long-term research project.

In 2024, students made an unexpected discovery. The eDNA results detected the presence of the Banded Kōkopu, one of New Zealand's native galaxiid fish that is considered locally rare. Surprisingly, the species was detected only in the Fish & Game ponds.

This immediately raised an important research question: Was the Banded Kōkopu really living in these ponds, or had contaminated DNA drifted in from elsewhere?

In 2025, students repeated the eDNA survey. Once again, the Banded Kōkopu was detected only in the Fish & Game ponds—not in any of the surrounding waterways, including Pūrimu Stream, which is connected to the ponds.

To investigate further, our students undertook their first-ever night field survey, as Banded Kōkopu are primarily nocturnal. The survey was a success. Students found both a healthy adult and a juvenile Banded Kōkopu, confirming that the species is indeed living within the Fish & Game ponds.

The discovery led to another fascinating question:

What is the migratory behaviour of this population?

Many native galaxiid fish migrate between freshwater and the sea during their life cycle. Could this population be different?

In 2026, during the breeding season, students carried out another night survey. This time they discovered a mature female Banded Kōkopu carrying eggs in the Fish & Game ponds.

This finding provides exciting evidence that this population may be completing its entire life cycle within the pond system, rather than migrating to the estuary or the ocean as expected. While further research is needed to confirm this, it opens up an entirely new area of investigation into the ecology and life history of this remarkable native fish.

The project continues to generate new questions every year. Each new group of students becomes part of an ongoing scientific story—building on previous discoveries, testing new hypotheses, and contributing valuable data to our understanding of New Zealand's freshwater biodiversity.

This is exactly what we aim to achieve in the Environmental Studies programme at EIT: providing students with authentic research experiences using modern scientific techniques while making meaningful contributions to environmental conservation.

The Banded Kōkopu Project is a perfect example of how teaching, research, and conservation can come together. Today's students are not simply learning established knowledge—they are helping to create it.

We still have many research questions to answer, and the journey continues.

There's something special about being part of our Environmental studies whānau.

We started our degree with a small group of passionate students, and it has been wonderful to see our programme continue to grow. By introducing new courses that reflect emerging technologies, industry needs, and hands-on learning opportunities, we are welcoming more students than ever before.

But one thing has never changed—we genuinely care for one another. From the day you join our programme until the day you graduate, and long after, you remain part of our academic family.

On this beautiful sunny winter day, we gathered at our outdoor learning Centre to celebrate three of our graduates—Jess, Sofia, and Trudi. Congratulations on completing your degrees! We are incredibly proud of your hard work, dedication, and achievements, and we can't wait to see the positive impact you will make in the environmental sector.

Our degree is more than lectures and assignments. It is about field experiences, research, GIS and spatial technologies, drones, eDNA, environmental monitoring, conservation, sustainability, and building lifelong friendships and professional networks.

🌿 Today’s Research Spotlight features Michael Shand’s research project:

“Identification of a suitable area to restore a wetland to mitigate flooding in Hawke’s Bay.”

Supervised by Dr Dinusha Jayathilake, Michael’s research explored how geospatial technologies can support climate resilience and environmental restoration.

Using satellite imagery, GIS workflows, and the Spatial Model Builder, Michael developed a spatial model to identify suitable locations for establishing new wetlands that could help reduce flood impacts in Hawke’s Bay.

This research demonstrates the power of GIS and environmental modelling in solving real-world environmental challenges and supporting sustainable land management decisions.

Our Microbiology laboratory is equipped with modern Leica DM500 microscopes, providing our students with a high-quality learning experience in biological and environmental sciences.

One of the great features of the Leica DM500 is its ability to connect to a laptop, allowing microscope images to be displayed on a larger screen. This is especially beneficial for students who find it difficult to observe specimens through the eyepieces or who have sensitivity to direct light. It also enables lecturers to demonstrate microscopic structures clearly to the whole class, making learning more interactive and accessible.

🌿 Learn from experienced environmental professionals at EIT! 🌿

Our Environmental Studies degree is taught by experienced lecturers who bring real-world knowledge and field experience directly into the classroom.

One of those experts is Chris Thorman, whose work on the Mohi Bush Predator Control Project with Hawke's Bay Regional Council is well known within the conservation community. In our Environmental Sampling course, first-year students gain hands-on experience using predator tracking techniques while learning about the importance of conservation monitoring in the field.
