Yesterday LC Moana took part in the Caritas Challenge for 2026, which is about taking action to show solidarity with those less fortunate than us.
We decided to "Sweat it" by not using electricity all day to try and understand what it's like to live with energy poverty. Energy poverty means not having enough safe, reliable, or affordable power for basic needs like lighting, heating and cooking. Many islands of the Pacific suffer from energy poverty.
Our learners loved having the lights off, and many realised they were much less distracted because there were no TVs or chromebooks. Even the kaitiaki managed to survive the day without using their laptops and phones.
When we experience the hardships that our brothers and sisters endure daily, we gain the empathy needed to truly help them. We hope the tamariki of LC Moana are inspired to help others, be people of hope, and be grateful for the blessings they have.
