**Whiria te tāngata: Weave the people together**

Last week at Taipa Treasures we went on a few excursions and made lots connections in the community.

On Wednesday we were invited to Kaingaroa School for their school cross country and colour fun run. What a cool experience for our tuakana tamariki.

On Thursday we took some of our younger tamariki for a hikoi to Taipa Area School for a play on the playground and to visit the library. For some of the tamariki this was their first excursion and they did amazing following the safety rules and enjoying getting out of the centre.

And on Friday we connected with Doubtless Bay Kindy where Sharee from EcoSolutions; a CBEC enterprise. Made harekeke darts. The tamariki had a great time seeing other tamariki their age while engaging in natural resources and creating a fun game.

These connections in the community allows for so much learning in our local curriculum. Ka pai tō mahi tamariki mā.

At Taipa Treasures we are honoured to be a part of a community project to restore Eden Terrace community rongoā space in Kaitaia. Last week we worked with Jade at the Taipa community gardens painting pavers that will be used to make a pathway in Eden Terrace. Jade taught us how use some of the rongoā to print leaf patterns onto the pavers. We also used some other techniques such as stamping and using a roller over the leaves. We think our pavers turned out beautiful! Once Jade had installed them in the path at Eden Terrace we are going to take a trip all the way into Kaitaia to view our art work on display. What fun we have contributing to, and connecting with, the community around us 🙂

Today was so special, because we decided to have a fire to celebrate the end of the term and Matariki. We knew our tamariki would enjoy this because they love ‘real work’. We spent the morning organising the fire with everyone getting involved with cutting up branches and collecting paper and sticks. We had a good kōrero about fire safety and then it was time to light the fire 🔥.

While we sat around the beautiful fire we had created, we all had a good kōrero about people or pets we love that had passed away in the past year. We also took time to remember our wonderful friends who had moved on to school. This type of remembrance and reflection connects to the Matariki star of Pōhutakawa ✨

As part of our Matariki celebrations we have been reflecting on our aspirations, hopes and dreams for the coming season. This connects to Hiwa-i-te-rangi the star associated with granting wishes and achieving goals for the year ahead.

Earlier in the week the tamariki painted their wishes on to their rocks and today we walked to the river and through our wishes in. What a fun way to connect to Hiwa-i-te-rangi ✨

At Taipa Treasures we decided to make a big ‘friendship’ soup to share together as our hākari to celebrate Matariki. We all contributed by bringing in a vegetable from our home. We talked about the connection that the star Tupuānuku has with the kai we bought in ~ that which is grown in the earth. Yesterday we had so much fun coming together as a team and preparing our soup. We were all so clever at chopping, peeling and grating that our kaiako just knew that we are big helps in the kitchen at home.
Today we cooked up our soup and ate it for lunch. What a great shared experience this was and what a yummy soup!

We had a bounty of vegetables (thank you whanau!) and an abundance of soup - so you are welcome to bring a container tomorrow to bring some home 🙂

A few weeks ago our tamariki had so much fun making natural cleaners with Sheree. We have left them to infuse and will now be sending them home. They are a concentrate so you will need to water them down ~ one part vinegar to one part water.

This was such a great hands on learning experience and a fun way to honour Tupuārangi ~ the fourth star in the Matariki cluster which is associated with Ranginui the Sky Father and connects to the food, herbs and tree canopy grown above the ground. Our tamariki loved to bring in their offerings from home. We had limes, oranges, rosemary, sage, lavender, pineapple sage, manuka and pine needles to work with. We learnt that these beautiful fragrant plants offer antibacterial (germ killing!) properties.

As you can imagine our center smelt AMAZING as our tamariki got to work cutting the herbs. What a great sensory experience and opportunity for rich discussion. Not only have we learnt about the plants governed by Tupuārangi, but we are also caring for our Earth too ~ because these cleaners have no chemicals that might make their way into Papatūānuku or our Moana or Awa.

Today, as part of our Matariki celebrations we honoured Waitā ~ the sixth star in the Matariki cluster that represents the ocean and all marine life. We did this by going for a walk along our beautiful coastline and appreciating the ocean’s bounty. We dug in the sand and admired the sand hoppers and shrimps. We also collected beautiful shells and rocks to take back to daycare. We saw lots of mussels and oyster shells which inspired rich discussion about the kaimoana that comes from the ocean. Our tamariki said that they would like to try some kaimoana to taste so we will do that this week too! How wonderful to take a morning to appreciate the wonderful bounty our ocean offers. Thank you Waitā ✨

Today Sheree shouted us hot chips for lunch because we did so well in our rubbish audit! All of our efforts to reuse and recycle have paid off and we only send the bare minimum to landfill. We are the first centre ever to receive a GOLD star for our efforts in sorting our rubbish from EcoSolutions; a CBEC enterprise. What wonderful little kaitiaki we are! We enjoyed our chips today and felt very proud of all of our efforts ♻️

Our tamariki had another great visit to the community gardens this week to do a fun workshop on ‘plastic free gardening’. We had a look at all the alternates to plastic that we could plant seeds in. We learnt we could plant in egg containers, toilet paper rolls and even eggshells or avocado skins! After we had a kōrero about this, we got to choose a plastic free container to plant our very own broad bean seeds in. We then did a bit of mahi in the garden pulling weeds and planting potatoes. We then headed back to Taipa Treasures inspired to plant up our garden for Matariki✨

What an amazing visit our tamariki had at the community gardens again yesterday! This time we met Jen, who is kaitiaki of the gardens (like us!) and she put us to work spreading compost around the plants. What beautiful rich soil it was ~ full of worms ~ our favourite! After we had done so much mahi, Jen was very kind and taught us all about which plants were edible. We tasted peas, broccoli flowers, rocket flowers and lettuce.

What fun this was and everyone was so engaged. Jen was so pleased with all of our mahi that she sent us home with fresh garden produce that Rhoda stir fried up for our afternoon kai.

What a wonderful hands on session we had at the gardens, we are learning so much while caring for our community too. 🫜🪏🪴
