Our toddlers may be small in stature but they are big on determination, challenging themselves on the battle rope and stepping stones.

Holding on, balancing, stretching and working their way across might look like simple play, but there is lots of hidden learning. Heavy work through their hands and arms provides calming proprioceptive input, while balancing and moving helps develop their vestibular system – two important sensory systems that support body awareness, confidence and emotional regulation.

Most importantly, they’re having fun and discovering what their bodies can do, building confidence and strength.

Fun, with hidden benefits including learning to control our impulses by stopping our bodies even when they want to keep moving; learning to pause before acting; learning to shift between activation (“go”) and regulation (“slow down”) and improving our body awareness, the foundation of recognising and managing emotions. Last Friday night, we held our Matariki Whānau evening and close to 200 of our beautiful Brainwaves community gathered on a stunning night under the stars. Matariki is a time to come together, honour those who came before us, celebrate the present and look ahead with hope. You can’t help but be hopeful for the future when you watch our beautiful tamarikix and hear happy voices raised in laughter, connection and waiata.
