Trees for Survival Friday 24th July
PLANTING DAY SUMMARY: 92A Utuhina Rd, Rotorua
On a chilly morning, 18 enthusiastic Year 5 & 6 students from Otonga Rd Primary School headed out across farmland to help plant the native trees they had grown at school. The planting site was a farm dam that has been permanently fenced-off to improve water quality, prevent erosion, and give local wildlife a home.
The tamariki showed dedication and learnt to be good kaitiaki of their local
environment. They took pride in careful planting, making sure every single stem was firmly packed in, so the local pūkeko wouldn't pull them back out! Luckily they didn’t have to dig the holes as these were prepared by a power drill.
The children could also see the trees that were grown and planted by their school around the other side of the dam the year before.
After finishing the mahi, the group had an enjoyable 1.5km walk back with great views over Lake Rotorua. They were then treated to a delicious sausage sizzle from Farm manager Alistair, and a kōrero on what it is like to be a farmer.
A big thanks to parents and staff who rolled up their sleeves and helped get all those plants in the ground. Also to Alistair, assistant manager Michael, and farm worker, Holly, for helping to make the day so memorable.

*Appreciation Post for our Principal- Te Rā o Tumeke Tumuaki*
A huge thank you to Gareth for his incredible leadership, friendship and guidance he continuously brings to our staff, tamariki and whānau at Te Kura o Tihiōtonga. Whether it is supporting our team, or encouraging our tamariki with his constant presence in the classroom and playground, it makes all the difference in our school community.
In Gareth’s own words:
“Kia ora Super Team,
Thank you so much for the wonderful poster, treats and kind words! Your thoughtfulness really brightened my day. The most important single word is TEAM, and leading such a passionate, hard-working and caring group is a privilege. Everything we achieve is a reflection of your dedication to our students and community. I am so grateful to work alongside you every day.”
He waka eke noa - We are all in this together.
We are truly fortunate to have such a dedicated leader guiding our waka.
Enjoy the photos of Gareth’s delicious morning tea - the posters the children and teachers made, speeches by Mr Carrington and Mrs McLaughlin and a quiz to test Mr Cunliffe how well he knows his school.
