Sometimes the most important learning happens one marble at a time ... 🌀

Carefully following each marble tumbling down the track with her eyes, this tamaiti is developing eye tracking skills - the ability to visually follow a moving object from one place to another. This skill begins developing from a very young age and is an important foundation for future learning.

For children as young as two, activities like this help strengthen visual attention, concentration, coordination, and the ability to track movement smoothly. These early foundations later support literacy skills such as following words across a page when reading and writing. They also support mathematical thinking by helping children track patterns, follow sequences, and visually organise information.

As they watch, wait, predict, and delight in where the marble will go next, they are building essential pre-literacy and pre-numeracy skills through wonder, repetition and hands-on play 💛

When you step through the gate of our kindergarten, it often feels less like arriving at an early childhood centre and more like cousins gathering at their aunty's house. The children know one another deeply. They play, create, negotiate, laugh, comfort, and grow alongside each other, forming relationships that feel very much like an extended whānau.

Our kaiako become the trusted aunties of this special place. We are there to offer guidance, share stories, provide comfort when needed, and celebrate each child's unique gifts. The rhythm of our days is woven together through shared experiences, familiar routines, and genuine care.

In a world that can often feel busy and hurried, there is something precious about children growing up surrounded by a community where everyone belongs. Older children naturally look after younger ones, friendships flourish across ages, and each child knows they are seen, valued, and welcomed.

It is this sense of family, of cousins gathered together under the watchful care of their aunties, that gives our kindergarten its warmth, heart, and magic 💞

There is something quietly extraordinary about watching a 5 year old learn cross stitch 🪡
Strengthening fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and patience - it also offers something less measurable and equally important: a sense of calm pride. Each tiny stitch becomes part of a bigger picture, showing children that beautiful things take time to create. In a world that moves so quickly, this work asks tamariki to slow down, focus, persevere and trust the process - thread by thread 🧵

A heartfelt thank you to Bekah and her wonderful team at Willowsong Tairawhiti for welcoming us so warmly during our impromptu visit. There’s something truly special about stepping into a space where the rhythm, care, and intention feel so familiar 💫

Connecting with like-minded kaiako is always nourishing — sharing stories, ideas, and inspiration that quietly reaffirm why we do what we do. These moments of whakawhanaungatanga remind us that we are part of a wider community, all tending to the same garden in our own beautiful ways🌱

We left feeling uplifted, inspired, and deeply grateful. Thank you for opening your doors and your hearts to us 🤍

The rain arrived with enthusiasm today 🌧 Not the quiet polite kind, but the full drumroll on rooftops and puddles kind ☔️ Sometimes the best playgrounds appear with clouds 😶‍🌫️

🌰 It’s Hazelnut Time of the Year!

The hazelnuts have begun to fall, and with them comes one of the quiet seasonal rhythms of our kindergarten.

Small baskets in hand, the children eagerly gather the nuts from beneath the trees, carefully carrying their treasures to the table. There, the work begins. With little hammers, steady hands, and much concentration, the children crack open the shells to discover what lies inside.

Moments like these bring together so many beautiful threads of learning. There is the joy of discovery, the strengthening of little hands, the patience of careful work, and the simple satisfaction of contributing to something real.

Some children collect, some crack, and others sort and share. Side by side, they work together, each finding their place in the activity.

Seasonal moments such as these connect the children to the natural rhythms of the year and offer meaningful work that engages both head, heart, and hands 🌰🍂

Can't wait for yummy homemade hazelnut butter😋

Among tangled greens and sunlit leaves, learning happens quietly 🌱 This is play with roots - In a lush garden, children learn by moving, noticing, wondering. They count petals without realising it, practise patience while watching things grow, and build a gentle respect for the living world around them 🌻
