Yet another high value employer and TTG stakeholder set to close.

The country's largest gas user Methanex has announced it will close its Taranaki plant after more than three decades of operation, saying New Zealand's declining natural gas supply has made continuing operations unsustainable.

In a statement on its website, the Canada-based firm announced it had agreed to sell substantially all of its New Zealand natural gas contractual entitlements commencing in the first quarter of 2027 and continuing through the end of the decade when such entitlements expire.

It also said Methanex expected to "indefinitely idle" its production facilities at Motonui, north of Waitara, with methanol manufacturing to cease at the end of February 2027, after 32 years of operation in the country.

The country's sole methanol manufacturer employs more than 200 people, with about 95% of production exported to customers in the Asia Pacific region. It uses 40% of New Zealand's gas.

Methanex NZ said it had been managing declining gas availability for several years and, with "no clear path to meaningful new supply", was no longer confident it could continue production.

The effects of water entering a steam line can be extremely dangerous and, in severe cases, catastrophic.

Accumulated condensate can be driven through the pipework at high velocity when steam is introduced, creating water hammer. This can damage valves, fittings, steam traps and pipework, and may result in serious injury to workers.

As an Operator, you can greatly reduce this risk by ensuring the steam system is properly drained and warmed through before being placed into service. Any accumulated condensate should be removed before steam is introduced, and steam should be admitted gradually so that the pipework can heat evenly and additional condensate can be released safely.

Today, we remember the coal mill — the workhorse behind efficient pulverized-coal combustion.

For decades, coal mills performed the critical task of drying, grinding and classifying coal to produce the fine, consistent fuel required for stable and efficient boiler operation. Their performance influenced everything from flame stability and combustion efficiency to emissions, boiler output and plant reliability.

As these plants disappear, so too does much of the practical knowledge required to operate and maintain them.

A fire in a waste oil plant and boiler house at Gloriavale near Greymouth has highlighted the need for safety controls and evacuation plans.

One person was taken to hospital with a probable cause identified as an "unfortunate incident" noting excessive combustible materials in the area.
