Ko Rawiri Wihapi toku ingoa.
Ko te Tumuaki hou o Te Kura Takawaenga o Mokoia.

I am married to Te Aroha. We have two children, Kihiroa & Aritaarita of Ngati Kuri, Ngati Whatua, Tainui & Te Arawa descent.

I am the current principal of Whangamarino School in Rotorua but I have been appointed as the new principal for Mokoia Intermediate School. I have a ‘passion’ for teaching, learning & education. I will do my best to support, encourage and be a voice for our Mokoia Community.

I believe we should strive to do our personal best to achieve the highest possible standards of learning in all endeavours that life has to offer. I have been a very successful principal and teacher during my teaching career for the past 25 years, 13 years as a principal. I am committed to be a visible, approachable and transparent principal who forms strong relationships with students, parents, community, local hapu and staff by maintaining high levels of communication and positive, progressive engagement.

We will build Mokoia Intermediate to be forward thinking, exciting, happy and a caring place. You can help significantly by supporting us on this journey full of challenges and a new beginning.

Come and introduce yourself, my door will always be open.

New Principal

The Board of Trustees has been working on the appointment of our new Principal. The appointment process included a range of steps including consultation with stakeholder groups, applicant’s self-assessment, referees’ reports, phone referencing, visits by the committee to meet applicants in their current place of employment, presentation by short-listed applicants, and a formal interview.

We would like to acknowledge and thank all members of our school community who took the opportunity to have input into this process. The Board considered a range of information in making its decision to appoint.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Matua Rawiri Wihapi as our new Principal. Rawiri will join Mokoia Intermediate ready to begin Term One next year.

Rawiri is an experienced Principal and joins us from Whangamarino School. We look forward to welcoming Rawiri and his whanau to Mokoia Intermediate with a full Powhiri on 30 January 2018, the first day of Term 1.

Tuhono i te Ao - Connecting the Worlds
Te Rōpū Āwhina (Āwhina) is Victoria University of Wellington on-campus support for Māori and Pasifika students that are studying in the Faculty of Science, Engineering, Architecture and Design (SEAD).
This year Āwhina aimed to introduce a programme that combines mātauranga Māori and mātauranga Pasifika with science to iwi, community groups, schools, kura kaupapa and whānau. Their programme called Tūhono I te Ao (Connecting the Worlds) is planned to engage youth through science education and technology set in the context of Māori and Pasifika knowledge and culture to inspire our youth into science career pathways; both western and traditional.
To this end, the rumaki class attended the science expo held on Thursday at the Sportsdrome.
Science, mātauranga Māori, Pacific culture and astronomy were brought together in fun interactive activities and in a predominantly te reo Māori speaking environment.

We enjoyed a superb performance by Cambridge Middle School on Friday morning. The performers included Damien Enright, who was a Mokoia student last year.

What a great experience! Four of our staff (Mrs Jones, Mrs Low, Mr Law and Mrs Hyde) have been attending the Tuesday night course at Hinemoa Marae to find out more about the stories of our hapu, Ngati Te Roro O Te Rangi and plan how we can use them as contexts in our local school (and preschool) curriculums. Here we are at the Waengaehe Stream.

On Friday after school we hosted Dr Michelle Dickinson aka “Nanogirl” to hold a teacher workshop on science. She came with Renee from the McDiarmid Institute and technician Pauli. Teachers from four schools attended.

Ahurei - The Rotorua Annual Primary Schools’ Kapa Haka Festival
Our kapa haka rōpu did us proud. Students from the rumaki class with other students interested in kapa haka, came together and trained intensively over the last week and a half, for Thursday night’s performance.
Every participating school performs once over the week, and in our section we were joined with two of our Kahui Ako schools, Lynmore and Owhata, on the stage at the Harvest Centre in Malfroy Road.
Matua Taimona was “stoked” with their performance. They looked great in full costume and this outing gave him the opportunity to see what needed to be added towards the regional competition next year.
Thanks too, to Matua Hori and whānau, for their contribution.
