Learning Through Play: Big Ideas with Small Diggers

Small diggers and dump trucks bring so much joy to our tamariki. As I watched the children at play, they carefully filled their dump trucks before driving them away to empty their loads. Their play was purposeful, focused, and full of imagination.

At one point, one of the tamariki invited me to join in by asking me to fill up a dump truck. Wanting to help, I picked up a truck and began filling it. I was quickly told, "Not that one!" and a digger was handed to me quite firmly. It was clear there was a plan, and I had been given a very specific role to play. Once I used the correct digger, my contribution was accepted, and I had successfully followed the instructions.

Stepping back again to observe, I was struck by the incredible communication taking place between the children. They spoke with confidence, gave clear directions to one another, and demonstrated wonderful leadership skills. Each child understood their role within the play, negotiated with others, and worked together to keep their shared ideas flowing. It was a pleasure to watch their cooperation, problem-solving, and growing ability to express their thoughts so clearly.

Experiences like this remind us that there are times when our role as kaiako is to simply observe and notice the learning that is unfolding. There are also times when we are invited into the children's play. By accepting those invitations, we gain valuable insights into their thinking, their plans, and the important roles they have created for themselves and for others.

Whether we are watching from a distance or actively taking part, both experiences provide rich opportunities to deepen our understanding of our tamariki. Their play is full of learning, and it is a privilege to be welcomed into their world.

Frozen Discoveries: Exploring Ice and Melting

Following our exciting ice exploration, the tamariki were invited to create their own frozen treasures. They carefully chose a variety of objects to place into containers of water. Food colouring and glitter were added, making the water bright and sparkling. The children eagerly selected plastic bugs, spiders, and even a small plastic bird to freeze inside the ice.

Once everything had been added, we explained that the containers would be placed in the freezer overnight and that we would see what had happened the next morning. The tamariki were full of excitement and anticipation as they wondered what their creations would look like.

The following morning, we brought out the frozen containers and placed them on the table for everyone to explore. The children immediately noticed that all of their objects were trapped inside the ice. One child tried to pull on the spider's leg, saying, "Help me, it's stuck!"

This provided a wonderful opportunity for learning. We explained that the ice would need to melt before the objects could be removed. We encouraged the tamariki to place their hands on the ice and asked, "What happens to your hands? Are they dry or wet?"

"Wet!" they all replied.

We then asked, "What do you think is happening to the ice when you put your hands on it?"

"It's melting!" the tamariki responded.

Our next question was, "Why do you think it is melting?"

The children looked carefully at their wet hands, but because their hands felt cold and wet from touching the ice, they found it difficult to understand where the heat was coming from.

To help them discover the answer, we suggested they rub their hands together. After a few moments, we asked, "How do your hands feel now?"

"They're warm!" they exclaimed.

This led to an exciting discussion about body heat. We explained that our hands are naturally warm and that this warmth transfers to the ice, causing it to melt. The tamariki were fascinated to discover that heat melts ice and that even the warmth from their own bodies could change the ice from a solid into water.

This engaging science experience encouraged the tamariki to ask questions, make predictions, test their ideas, and discover how heat affects ice. Through hands-on exploration and meaningful conversations, they developed an understanding of cause and effect while strengthening their curiosity, observation skills, and scientific thinking.

The Joys of a Cold Winter Morning's

The cold winter morning brought a wonderful learning opportunity for our tamariki. Today, Olivia brought in a trough tray that had been left outside overnight. The tray was covered in a beautiful layer of ice, sparking curiosity and excitement as the children gathered around to explore.

The tamariki quickly discovered that when they placed their hands on the ice, it left behind a wet handprint as the ice began to melt. from the heat of there hands. This led to conversations about how warmth can melt ice and encouraged the children to make predictions and observations.

Their exploration continued as they used their fingernails to scratch and create patterns in the ice. Curious minds then began searching for other objects to see what else would work on the icy surface. One exciting discovery was that chalk worked beautifully! The chalk became damp as it touched the ice, allowing the tamariki to create colourful, wet drawings and experiment with different marks and designs.

This was a fun, hands-on learning experience that encouraged curiosity, creativity, scientific thinking, and problem-solving. Through play, the tamariki explored the changing properties of ice, tested different materials, and shared their discoveries with one another. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they investigated, experimented, and learned together.

This afternoon our littlest learners had so much fun exploring gloop together! 💙

Messy play is about so much more than making a mess. During today's experience our babies enjoyed tummy time while reaching, grabbing, squishing and even a little taste testing as they discovered the different textures. Alongside their friends, they watched one another, shared smiles and babbles, and began building those early social connections.

These simple play experiences support sensory exploration, fine and gross motor development, curiosity, communication, and a growing sense of belonging. It was wonderful to see each pēpi investigating at their own pace and enjoying the experience together. ✨

Learning Through Play in Our Nursery 🌿

Every day in our nursery we thoughtfully create invitations to play that spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and support each child's learning and development.
From sensory experiences and imaginative small worlds to colour matching, dinosaur adventures, and space exploration, each setup is carefully planned with our tamariki in mind. We use open-ended resources that encourage children to investigate, problem-solve, make discoveries, and lead their own learning through play.

These invitations aren't about creating a "right" way to play—they're about giving tamariki opportunities to explore at their own pace, follow their interests, and build confidence as capable and competent learners.
Some of our recent experiences have included: 🦕 A dinosaur small world using natural resources to inspire storytelling and imaginative play. 🚀 A space-themed sensory tray where tamariki explored planets, astronauts, and the moon through hands-on discovery. 🌈 A colour matching invitation using recycled formula tins and felt, supporting early colour recognition, sorting, and fine motor skills while promoting sustainability through reused materials.
We love watching each setup evolve as the children add their own ideas, creativity, and imagination. Their curiosity inspires us every day! 💚

🚒 A Special Fire Truck Visit! 🚒

What an exciting day we had at the centre! We are incredibly lucky to have one of our very own volunteer firefighters, Sarah, who kindly brought her fire truck along for the tamariki to explore.

The excitement on everyone's faces was priceless as the fire truck was parked in the car park with its bright flashing lights. The tamariki couldn't wait for their turn to climb inside the cab, imagining what it would be like to be a real firefighter rushing off to help people in need.

Sarah opened all of the compartments around the outside of the truck, giving both the tamariki and their whānau the opportunity to discover what firefighters carry. They were fascinated to see the hoses, safety gear and the many different pieces of equipment used to keep our community safe. There were lots of curious questions and plenty of "wows!" as everyone explored.

It wasn't just the tamariki who enjoyed the experience! Even our Area Manager couldn't resist climbing into the fire truck. We're pretty sure it was a childhood dream come true, and judging by the smile on their face, she loved every minute of it!

Experiences like these bring learning to life, helping our tamariki build an understanding of the important people who help keep our community safe while inspiring curiosity through hands-on exploration.

Redwoods Adventure – Off on a Lion Hunt! 🦁🌿

Another exciting adventure in the Redwoods saw our mixed-age group of tamariki set off with curious minds and big imaginations. Before we began our walk, we gathered together and asked, "What do you think we might find today?" Without hesitation, one child called out, "A lion!" The excitement spread quickly as everyone agreed that a lion hunt was the perfect mission for the day.

Off we went, carefully exploring every corner of the forest. Every rustle in the bushes and every unusual sound had us wondering if we had finally found our lion. More often than not, it turned out to be one of our own tamariki making the loudest lion roar, filling the forest with laughter!

As our adventure continued, the tamariki embraced every challenge nature offered. They climbed over fallen logs, jumped from tree stumps, crawled beneath bushes, searched inside hollow logs, and worked together to discover what hidden treasures the forest held. Throughout the journey they demonstrated wonderful teamwork, encouraged one another to try new things, listened carefully to instructions, and showed great problem-solving skills as they navigated the natural environment.

Towards the end of our adventure, we discovered some large flat wooden boards, which quickly became the perfect place for a game of Statues. The laughter and excitement echoed through the trees as everyone froze in their funniest poses.

After such a busy morning of exploring, climbing and playing, our adventurous explorers were ready for a well-earned rest. We gathered together to enjoy a refreshing drink of water, sharing stories about our favourite parts of the adventure before making our way back to the van.

Every visit to the Redwoods offers endless opportunities for imagination, physical challenge, cooperation and discovery. These experiences help our tamariki build confidence, resilience and a deep appreciation for the natural world—all while creating wonderful memories together.

Every morning, our big girls eagerly make their way to the dress-up area, excited to choose their outfit for the day. It has become a much-loved part of their morning routine, where their creativity and imaginations come to life.

Today, they emerged twirling, dancing, and proudly showing off their chosen outfits with huge smiles on their faces. Their confidence shone as they paraded around the room, delighting in their new looks and inviting others to admire their creations.

The addition of our new hats and handbags has been a wonderful enhancement to the dress-up area. These accessories have inspired even more imaginative role play, encouraging the tamariki to express themselves, build confidence, develop social connections, and create their own magical stories together. It is always a joy to see their personalities shine as they begin each day with creativity, laughter, and fun.
