Technology at Breens Intermediate has continued to impress us with the amazing creations our students have been making and the opportunities they get to experience. From printmaking in Art and designing and 3D-printing chocolate moulds in Digi, to cooking pretzels in Foods and creating character windmills in Workshop, our Year 7 and 8 students have been super engaged and are learning so many new skills along the way!

🧩🚐 Puzzles & Road Trips in Rātā Zone! 🇳🇿

We’ve been making the most of our wet days with puzzles, teamwork and plenty of perseverance! 🧩

We’ve also been planning our own NZ road trips, researching destinations, routes and things to see and do. And of course, no road trip is complete without travelling in our iconic combi vans! 🚐🇳🇿

Lots of learning and lots of fun!

HB 5 have been reading and writing all about Pirates!
We designed treasure maps where X marked the spot!
We made our treasure maps look old by ripping the edges and dying with tea.
When we had finished we wrote instructions about how to get to the treasure!

The Matatea team are super excited to be learning all about Dinosaurs this term! We even have a trip coming up next week where we will be digging up fossils and playing golf around life sized moving dinosaurs! Lots of fun!

Our HB9 & HB10 learners have been getting active, creative and putting their writing skills to the test! This term, we have been learning how to write structured, engaging paragraphs using emotive language, similes, metaphors and other powerful language features.

To bring our writing to life, we headed outside for some running races! 🏃‍♂️💨 After each race, we focused on a different part of the experience — how we felt before, during and after the race. We used templates to capture our thoughts and feelings, transformed our notes into sentences, and then worked hard to turn those sentences into well-structured paragraphs.

It has been so cool watching our learners take a real-life experience and turn it into vivid writing that makes the reader feel like they are right there on the track with them! ⭐

We have loved seeing the creativity, excitement and enthusiasm that has gone into this learning — and there are some seriously impressive writers emerging in HB9 & HB10! 💪📚✨

There is lots of excitement in the Kōwhai Zone as we begin our novel studies! 📚✨ Our three different literacy classes have started reading The Wild Robot, Holes, and The Sheep-Pig, giving us three very different and exciting stories to explore.

We are enjoying making predictions about what might happen next, discovering and using new vocabulary, and looking closely at the characters, settings and events in each story. It has been fantastic to share our ideas, ask questions and dig deeper into the meaning behind the stories. We can’t wait to see where our novels take us next!

Homebases 3 and 4 enjoyed learning all about minibeasts with Anthony from the Museum. He brought along lots of different insects and spiders for us to see and learn about. We discovered that insects have 3 body parts and 6 legs, while spiders have 2 body parts and 8 legs! We’re looking forward to learning more about minibeasts over the next few weeks.

In Rama Rā zone last week, students made bowls crafted entirely from rolled-up magazines! Using nothing but old magazine pages, careful rolling, and a lot of patience, Rama Rā transformed everyday recycling into functional art.
