Maths has been in full swing as ngā tamariki in both the Oīoī and Haumata rooms explored counting, shapes, colors, sorting, patterns, and measuring through rich provocations, waiata, and hands-on tākaro (play)! From posting and building to recognizing new symbols, our clever learners spent the month making sense of their world and discovering that maths is all around us, proving every single day that the best kind of learning happens through joyful play and curiosity—he akoranga pai ki te katoa, ka rawe!

On Tuesday the tamariki in the Haumata Rūma got to experience a magical snowfall at preschool! ❄️ Ngā tamariki watched out the the window with curiosity before getting rugged up nice and warm to pop outside and experience the snow falling on their faces.

Days like these create such special memories for our tamariki and provide wonderful opportunities to explore our natural world through curiosity and discovery ❄️

❄️ Snow Day Fun! ❄️

Today we explored the magic of snow through play, discovery, and lots of excitement! The children were curious as they touched, observed, and experimented with the snow, sharing ideas about how it feels, looks, and changes. These hands-on experiences encourage language development, scientific thinking, creativity, and teamwork while creating joyful memories together.

There’s nothing quite like seeing the wonder of snow through a child’s eyes! ☃️🤍

Loose Parts Exploration in Pūkio Rūma.
The tamariki in our Pūkio Rūma have been enjoying exploring a wide range of loose parts in their outdoor learning space.
Using an assortment of recycled containers, jars, boxes, reels and other open-ended resources the tamariki investigated pouring and filling, transferring objects, stacking and balance while continuing to develop their fine motor skills, problem-solving and early mathematical thinking.
It was wonderful for kaiako to see the curiosity, creativity, imagination and perseverance of the tamariki as they explored and discovered, learning through play.

✨ Mānawatia a Matariki ✨

The tamariki of Oīoī rūma have been celebrating Matariki through meaningful learning and play.

Together, we have created sparkling stars, collaged kites, explored star-themed sensory experiences, shared Matariki stories and waiata, and prepared delicious kai, including decorating biscuits and vegetable soup.

As we celebrate Matariki, we reflect on the importance of whanaungatanga and manaakitanga, embracing the opportunity to nurture connections, show kindness, and welcome the new year with hope, gratitude, and new aspirations. 🌟

Our super cool Raupo Room
On Wednesday the 8th of July the Raupo room took advantage of a break in the weather to take a walk around the block. The prospect of some outdoor time made all our Tamariki super-efficient. We managed to eat our morning kai, go to the toilet, dress up all warmly, and put on our hi-vis vests in record time.
We lined up in pairs, and then we were off!
Our Tamariki did so well. We listened to our Kaiako, we stayed in our lines, and we looked for cars before we crossed the road. We even practiced calling out house numbers and naming road signs as we went. What fun!
That was not the end of the fun. After lunch, we decorated some star cookies made by our lovely Anj! Yum yum. We beat the rainy day blues.

Matariki in the Raupō Ruma
The tamariki in Raupō Ruma were very busy last week exploring the different stars of Matariki and learning about their meanings. They enjoyed a variety of art experiences that encouraged them to express their understanding and creativity.
To celebrate all of their hard work, we created an art gallery for our whānau to explore during our Matariki evening. It was wonderful to see the tamariki proudly sharing their artwork, talking about what they had learned, and explaining how the stars of Matariki connect to the natural world around us.
It was a special evening that celebrated learning, creativity, and the importance of coming together as a community.

Cold frosty mornings add a layer of adventure to our outdoor play space. This morning a group of our explorers discovered that the warmth of our bodies can melt the ice and frost and leave evidence we were there. The tamariki used their number knowledge to time how long the ice took to melt on the rock vs in their hands, and how long we had to hold our hands on the frosty platforms before it melted. We learnt about temperature and expanded our weather and seasons knowledge. Even though Winter is often cold and grey we can always find the sunny side up by allowing tamariki to explore and experience new things. Learning is fun!

In Haumata, the tamariki have been enjoying the opportunity of exploring with messy play. Through this, it is allowing their natural curiosity and for young children, especially babies and toddlers explore their world through the senses. They are learning foundational cognitive principles as the exercise motor, language and social skills.
