Nau mai, haere mai to Term 2! 🌿 We are so excited to open our doors for another term of play-based adventures at Richmond Playcentre, Monday: 9am - 12pm, Wednesday: 9.15am - 12.45pm and Friday: 9.15am - 12.45pm.

What a wonderful excursion to Moturoa (Rabbit island). We enjoyed splashing in the water, tiny finger and toes exploring the texture of sand, building moats and making the most of the warm Autumn sunshine. Getting out together helps strengthen Mana whenua, the sense of belonging within our group, and of course Mana aotūroa exploration.

Easter crafts incoming! We loved using foraged foliage for this craft. Sticking leaves onto contact paper in a frame in order to decorate eggs, that can then be cut out to create beautiful transparent artwork 🐣

One of the wonderful things about playcentre is how truly child led it is. Some of the Tamariki are very focused on fishing currently and so they set off to find the best sticks to make fishing rods. With a little help from their grown up assistant they attached magnets to string, and paper clips to cut out ika (fish) now they’re free to fish the day away 🎣

Coloured water, oil and some droppers was all it took to set imaginations alight today. We enjoyed watching the bubbles made by dripping oil into water, and water into oil!

Sometimes the most simple set ups can inspire the most imaginative play. Dinosaurs were placed in the sandpit, and the Tamariki took charge! Creating vast landscapes with mountains, valleys and foraged flower trees. It was incredible to see this play unfold 🦖🦕

Today we welcomed our beautiful new Whare takaro to the space. We gathered to share a karikia and spoke intentions over some water, which the Tamariki then sprinkled throughout the whare using beautiful dahlia flowers. To respect tikanga we made it clear that this is not a space for eating, and is not to be redecorated with paint or slime to preserve the beauty for children to come, and also to respect all of the time and mahi put into this project by the woodwork class at boys college. We look forward to seeing all the fun memories made in this beautiful new space.

Wishing everyone a happy Valentine’s Day. The Tamariki have been sharing the love this week by creating some extra special cards. This effect is made by mixing paint with dish soap, then cookie cutters are dipped into the mix creating colourful bubbles which pop creating fun droplets of colour ❤️🩷🤍
