💛 We’ve been listening. Now we’re asking for change.

Over the past few months, the Youth Hauora Network has been listening to rangatahi, schools, youth organisations and community groups about how the rising cost of living is affecting young people across the Coast.

And the message is clear:

The rising cost of living is a youth wellbeing issue - not just an economic one.

Food insecurity. Family pressure. Missing out on sport and activities. Struggling to find work. Transport costs. Housing stress. Increasing worry about the future. 💛

We’ve pulled what we’ve been hearing together into a Youth Hauora Network Community Open Letter, and we’re sending it to local MPs, 2026 election candidates and the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board.

Now we want our community to read it too. 👇

🌱 HELLO SPRING! 🌸

Okay… the weather might not have quite caught up yet 😂 but Spring has officially sprung, and we’re very ready for it!

Longer days, warmer evenings, more time outside and hopefully lots more opportunities for community hangs, kōrero and connection across the Coast 💛

We’re looking forward to seeing what this season brings - and getting out and about with all of you!

Our September Youth Hauora Network hui is all about proper connecting.

No big presentations. No homework. Just a chance to pause in the middle of crazy town, grab a cuppa, eat some kai and have a good old nosey around at what everyone else is up to. 😂💛

🥊 Have you met Will yet?

If you’re on the Coast and work with young people, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Will from 180MMA.

Will and Rach run 180MMA in Ōrewa, and honestly, these two are such a big part of the community.

Yes, it’s an MMA gym - but it’s about so much more than fighting.

Will has somehow become the unofficial Uncle of half the young people on the Coast 😂. He’s brilliant with kids and teens, creating a space where young people can show up, have a yarn, learn something new, get challenged, have a laugh and - most importantly - belong.

He works alongside schools, families and community organisations, and has a real knack for connecting with young people exactly where they’re at.

So, if you’re a young person looking for a place to belong, or you know a young person who could do with a good crew around them…

On a Roll - helping rangatahi have their say!

We reckon young people’s voices matter. A lot. 💛

So we’re excited to share On a Roll - a youth-led movement helping rangatahi get enrolled, understand voting, and have their say about the future of Aotearoa.

And just to be super clear 👇

The Youth Hauora Network is proudly non-partisan. We don't support any political party or candidate, and we will never tell young people who to vote for.

Who you vote for is completely up to you.

What we do want is for eligible young people to have the information and confidence to make their own decisions and participate in the things that affect their lives and communities.

So if you work with rangatahi, go give On a Roll a follow and check out their youth-friendly resources. 🙌

Share their mahi in your spaces, pass it on to young people, and help make voting feel a little less confusing and a lot more accessible.

Because having a voice is pretty important. 💛

On A Roll - Youth Vote 2026

NCEA season is here… and so is Coast Stress Less!

If you’ve got a rangatahi in Years 11–13 who is staring down NCEA and thinking uhhhh… where do I even start?” - this is worth knowing about. 👀

Coast Stress Less is a FREE, chill study space in Ōrewa where young people can:

📖 Get some study done
🧠 Get unstuck when the brain stops braining
🧘‍♀️ Take a break + reset
🤝 Study alongside their mates
🍪 Enjoy free snacks (obviously important)

It’s completely free, drop-in, and designed to help young people study smarter and stress less - without making the whole NCEA thing feel quite so overwhelming.

It’s open to high school students in Years 11–13 across the Hibiscus Coast, with supportive adults around and no need to book for the regular study sessions.

We LOVE seeing local organisations creating practical, welcoming spaces for rangatahi during those big stressful moments. 💛

🌿 A little Youth Hauora Network pulse check…

At our latest hui, we asked some of the people working directly alongside rangatahi across the Coast three simple questions:

🌱 What’s exciting in your space right now?
🌱 What are you noticing for young people and whānau?

We heard about learner licences, boys’ camps, youth workers in schools, new collaborations, employment pathways, Ballers, the Youth Hub, the Silverdale Village Collective and heaps more.

We also heard about some of the challenges our young people are facing - anxiety, va**ng, family stress, disengagement and violence.

But one thing came through really clearly:

There is some bloody awesome mahi happening across the Coast. 💛

And people are increasingly connecting, sharing resources and finding ways to work together.

That’s the whole point of the Youth Hauora Network.

We don't need everyone doing everything.

We just need to know who is doing what, where the gaps are, and how we can back each other.

💛 A huge thank you to two very special wahine toa

Over the past couple of hui, we’ve had the chance to say a very big ngā mihi nui to Holly and Marilyn as they both step away from the Youth Hauora Network Steering Group.

Holly has been our incredible Steering Group Chair, and Marilyn has been part of the network right from the beginning. Between them, they have brought so much wisdom, care, encouragement, connection and aroha to the YHN.

We genuinely wouldn't be where we are today without the mahi and energy these two have poured into the network. 🌿

But don't worry - this isn't goodbye!

Holly and Marilyn are simply stepping off the Steering Group to make space for new people, new ideas and new energy. They are still very much part of our YHN whānau, and we know we'll continue to see them around the Coast, cheering on the mahi and supporting rangatahi. 💛

Thank you, Holly and Marilyn. We are so grateful for you both!

🌿 A little hui recap!

We had our latest Youth Hauora Network hui at Coast Community Trust, and it was so lovely to be back in their warm and welcoming hub. 💛

This hui was all about whakawhanaungatanga - properly connecting with each other.

We did a little community sense check and heard from some of the incredible people working alongside rangatahi on the Coast, shared what’s happening in our different spaces, and had some really good kōrero about the challenges and opportunities we’re seeing.

We also kept the conversation going around our Cost of Living Open Letter - which is coming soon! 👀

And, of course, there was plenty of good kai, good chats and lots of catching up. ☕️🍪

A huge thank you to Caitlin and the team at Coast Community Trust for looking after us and making us feel so welcome.

One of our favourite things about the YHN is getting people from different parts of our community into the same room - because so much good mahi starts with simply knowing who’s out there. 🌿
