Huanui College The school came about by the vision of its founder, Mr Evan Hamlet. The school is situated on 30 hectares of rolling hills enclosed by stone walls.

Huanui College is committed to promoting achievement and providing an environment that encourages all students to develop their abilities to achieve personal excellence. Huanui College was established on 8 February, 2010 and officially opened by the Honourable Heather Roy and Mayor Stan Semenoff on March 20, 2010, at our Opening Day. Evan, originally from Dargaville, wanted to create a school here

in Northland where children could access an education that was both nationally and globally competitive in both middle and secondary schooling.

Hands-On Environmental Management in Action! Our AS Environmental Management students spent the day at NorthTec exploring future careers in conservation. From learning about native bat protection with the Northland Regional Council to kick-sampling in the Raumanga Stream, students gained real-world fieldwork skills. They wrapped up the day in the lab classifying aquatic life under high-powered microscopes. Outstanding effort, team!

On Friday 7th August 2026 Huanui College held their annual Whānau Swimming Sports at the Whangārei Aquatics Centre. This was a great event that saw a large number of students swimming in both competitive and non-competitive events. A huge thank you to all the parents and family members who volunteered their time to come along and help support this event and also to the amazing team of Huanui College staff and students who made this day possible.

Sammi Irwin writes of her experience after competing in THE BEAST!

"We did The Beast! A 6km run across a farm which is full of mud and challenges! The atmosphere was really cool, with music and support people all throughout the course, plus you get a medal at the end. My friends and I ran as a group, all dressed in white so the mud would really show, and it added to the fun! We slipped over, threw mud balls, and crawled through the muck, it was such a good time and lots of laughs. Schools from all over Northland joined in, making it a perfect chance to catch up with friends from different places. If you haven't already, I definitely recommend getting involved next year!"

Another awesome Mathex event for years 7,8,9 and 10!! Ngāpua took out first place, and Hillary followed closely behind. Sheppard came 3rd, which left Blake for 4th place. Thanks to the Mathematics Department for a well organised and smooth afternoon, to the senior students for judging and to Hector Goldie for capturing the vibe so well.

Thank you everyone for supporting the launch of Issue 11 The Huanuian! We enjoyed delicious ice cream gelato cake to celebrate and writers and story stars picked up their brand new copies to take home.

This issue features stories ranging from Sienna Renwick sharing her journey with dance, to Natalie Lim adjusting to the rural life in New Zealand. From Millie Ana Thompson’s three month exchange in Canada to Alumus Seamus Howard writing about the unpredictable frontline world of emergency. An awesome range of stories from our people!!

For those interested in becoming part of this publication, MsL will be back in two weeks time to meet with the writers working on the next issue, #12. This issue will launch in November. Photos and results from the Big Sing from Term 2!! Thank you to Marcus McGregor for his writing below, and to the multiple photographers that took stunning photos!!

The Big Sing competition is always one of the highlights of my year, and this year was no exception. The senior students and whānau prefects put an incredible amount of work and dedication into their whānau performance, and it was clear that everyone involved in the day was having an awesome time.

A standout moment for me was being part of the Sheppard Small Sing. The atmosphere in the room was fantastic, with the audience fully engaged and the energy feeling truly vibrant throughout the performance. It was exciting to see the results of all the hard work the whānau had put in over the first half of the year. The creativity the student leaders had in portraying the performances filled the room with laughter and smiles.

The overall standard of singing was impressive. When comparing the quality of the singing and overall performances from previous years, it was clear that the standard has increased dramatically from when the competition started in 2020. I think that this can be accredited to the increase in involvement from the school as a whole.

The bands were also operating at another level, showcasing outstanding musicianship and preparation. Their performances were a testament to the dedication and effort invested by the musicians throughout the year. Overall, I found that the Big Sing was a really fun event full of creativity, talent, encouragement and an electric school spirit.

In Term 2, Miss O'Connell shared her specialism of Forensic Science with some lucky students during Activities. A small group of Year 7's explored all the ways in which CSI's/SOCO's collect evidence from a crime scene, as well as ways to analyse that evidence. All their training led them up to the end session where they had to attend a mock crime scene, collect evidence and then analyse the evidence to find the correct suspect. Both groups were successful showing amazing Forensic skill and understanding!
