🥔 Potato Growing Competition Results! 🥔

Last year, our three mini groups took on the challenge of growing the most potatoes and today we finally uncovered the results!

The tamariki carefully tipped out each bucket and searched through the soil to see what had grown:
🌱 Tall Tōtara – found only the original potato, with no new growth
🌼 Kōwhai – discovered lots of potatoes in all shapes and sizes
🌺 Pōhutukawa – found just a couple of potatoes

🎉 Congratulations to our winners – Kōwhai! 🎉

The excitement was contagious as each new potato was uncovered! Now we’re deciding what delicious kai we can make together, and getting ready to plant some winter flowers to keep our garden colourful through the colder months 🌸

This month, the tamariki at Little Peppertree have been taking part in the Waimakariri District Council community celebration of the migratory birds returning to our braided rivers.

Today, we went on an excursion to Victoria Park to hide the special river stones the tamariki have been carefully decorating with native river birds such as the oyster catcher, banded dotterel, wrybill, black-billed gull, pied stilt, and black-fronted tern.

If you’re visiting the park, keep a lookout – you might discover one of these treasures tucked into the garden, beneath a tree by the playground, or even hidden under a park bench. Happy hunting!

We had a wonderful morning exploring the river, and collecting natural materials on our bush walk to build our own boats. The children showed great creativity in their unique designs and loved watching them float in the water.

Under the stars of Matariki, the Little Peppertree whānau came together to celebrate the Māori New Year. Around the bonfire, we sang waiata and shared warm soup and toasted marshmallows.
