Did you know in Aotearoa we send over one million kope (nappies) to landfill every, single, day. 🤯

And nappies don’t decompose, over 500+ years they slowly break down into tiny pieces of plastic called microplastics which can be found in our soil, water, sand, blood and even air particles!

✅That’s why we are supporting whānau to make the switch to reusable kope. Saving te taiao and their wallet.

⚡️Pīki mihi ki a Whangarei District Council for their support of our Kope Tautaiao, Reusable Nappy programme which we are continuing to roll out across Whangarei this year.

🌬️Every time we choose kope tautaiao, we choose to honour our connection to Papatūānuku and the values handed down by our tūpuna, and we choose to make a difference for our whenua, our tamariki, and the generations to come.

Ka rawe Reo orioiri - showing us how it’s done 👏🏾

At Ōhua (two early learning centres that I hold dear to my heart) Samuel Te Tau from Para Kore supported us to reduce our waste. We started with a waste audit and realised that we were sending over 500 litres of waste each week to landfill, into Papatūānuku! Over 70% of this was disposable nappies.

We introduced kope tautaiao (washable nappies) into our space and our waste dropped by 70%!!!

We are so pleased to use kope tautaiao at Reo oriori. We have a separate washing machine that does hot, 3 hour plus washes, and a specific cleaning procedure to ensure the health and wellbeing of our tamariki. Whānau can also opt out if they choose.

We provide all kope (nappies) for our tamariki, including our kope tautaiao.

Another way we practice kaitiakitanga at Reo oriori.
