Most families researching Thailand for their student imagine the beaches and the wildlife. What they don't expect is how deeply the experience changes their student.
Ethical elephant sanctuaries, meditation with Buddhist monks, real cultural immersion in local markets.
These aren't tourist checkboxes. They're the experiences Pacific Discovery students say stayed with them for life.

If your student has just been accepted to college and is wondering whether to defer for a gap year first, this guide is for you.
Deferring college for a gap year is far more straightforward than most families expect.
98% of US universities will honour a deferral request. Many actively encourage it. And the research consistently shows that students who take a structured gap year before college return with higher GPAs, greater academic direction, and more maturity than those who enrolled straight from high school.
The process does have a few moving parts worth getting right, particularly around financial aid, what to include in the deferral request, and how to make the strongest possible case to the admissions office.
We just published a ✨complete guide✨ covering all of it, including a deferral letter template you can adapt and use, a step by step process guide, financial aid advice, and how an Accredited Gap Year Program like Pacific Discovery's strengthens a deferral request.

Australia delivers everything students sign up for. The Noosa Everglades. Crescent Head surf. The Blue Mountains. Thousands of kilometres of spectacular east coast road trip.
But after leading groups across Australia twice, Pacific Discovery instructor Henry Grayson noticed something worth writing about.
The experiences that most shaped students were rarely the headline ones.
🌱 They were the long van conversations somewhere on the New South Wales coast.
🌱 The quiet pride after paddling the Noosa Everglades for hours.
🌱 Cooking dinner together at a campsite after a long day.
🌱 Watching the sunrise over the Tasman Sea.
🌱 Stargazing far from city lights and realising that the group of strangers they started with has become something much more than that.
Henry has just shared four unexpected lessons students consistently bring home from a gap year in Australia, and why those moments often leave the deepest mark.

If you have a student thinking about a gap year and you are not sure where to start, we made this for you.
The gap year research process can feel overwhelming. There is a lot of information out there, not all of it is reliable, and it is not always easy to know which questions to ask or how to tell a genuinely good program from a well-marketed one.
After 25 years of running accredited gap year programs and helping thousands of students and families through this decision, we put everything we know into one honest, practical guide.
It covers what a gap year actually is, what the research says about outcomes, the different types of programs and how they compare, what accreditation means and why it matters, how costs break down and how to fund a gap year, the best destinations and how to choose between them, and how the right program changes depending on your student's life stage.
No sales pitch. Just the information we wish every family had access to at the beginning of this process.

Fiji is often imagined as a holiday destination. Resorts, beaches, honeymoons.
But for students on the Pacific Discovery Polynesian Journey, it becomes something entirely different.
It is the morning you hike the towering sand dunes at Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park and spend the afternoon planting native trees to help restore the coastline. The afternoon you snorkel the warm waters around Monuriki Island, the remote Cast Away filming location, with the Pacific Ocean stretching out in every direction. The moment a local coordinator places a shell necklace around your neck at the airport and you realise the warmth of the Fiji Islands is going to be unlike anything you expected.
Pacific Discovery instructor Henry Grayson just wrote about three of those moments, and why Fiji consistently ends up being one of the most talked-about stops on the journey.
