Tēnā koutou e te whānau 🌿

We’re calling on our wonderful whānau and community to come along and lend a hand for our Planting Day at Pouto School on Monday 31 August from 10am.

With 280 native trees ready to go into the ground, many hands really will make light work!
Bring along a spade if you can, wear something you don’t mind getting dirty, and come join us for a great morning working together for our kura and our environment.

Everyone is welcome - we’d love to see you here! 💚🌿

Following our tikanga, Pōuto School went to pay our respects today to our beloved kaumātua, Papa Joe, who passed away this week. Our tamariki were always cherished by Papa Joe, and today they sang their hearts out for him, a small way of thanking him for the countless ways he cared for them over the years.

For many years, Papa Joe quietly gave his time and kindness to our kura. Every Friday, he would come to school to put on a feed for our babies, asking for nothing in return. He did it simply because he loved and cared deeply for our tamariki. His generosity, humility, and aroha will never be forgotten.

Papa Joe, your legacy lives on in the hearts of our children, our staff, and our whānau. Thank you for every meal, every smile, every laugh, and every act of kindness you shared so freely.

Moe mai rā e te rangatira, e Papa Joe. Haere, haere, haere atu rā. You will always hold a special place in the heart of Pōuto School. ❤️

Today we are proud to shine the spotlight on Syndara, one of our wonderful senior students.

Syndara is always ready to lend a helping hand to our younger tamariki and staff. She greets everyone with a smile, brings a positive attitude to school each day, and is a great role model within our kura.

Ka pai, Syndara - we are so proud of you! 💛

The Journey of Sustainability at Pouto School

It has been a long journey of sustainable vision for Pouto School, as we continue to grow our connection with our whenua, wai, taiao, and community.

From planting along Ripiroa Beach and restoring local waterways, to creating kawakawa and kūmarahou balms, composting, worm farming, pest control and growing food in our produce paddock, sustainability has become part of everyday life at Pouto School.

These experiences are woven throughout our local curriculum, "Ngā Raranga o Pouto", giving tamariki authentic opportunities to learn, contribute and care for the environment around them.

This journey has been shaped and strengthened by many people along the way. We acknowledge our local hapū, Te Uri o Hau Environs, NRC, Mountain to Sea, and the many locals, whānau, past parents and community members whose knowledge, time, resources and support have been invaluable - both past and present.

We are also excited to be developing a partnership with Chinese Forestry Co, creating new opportunities for environmental learning and strengthening connections between our kura, community and environmental stakeholders.

Together, we are growing the next generation of kaitiaki for Pouto

He aituā! He aituā!

Pouto School acknowledges with deep sadness the passing of Colin Frenchie, a respected rangatira and cherished member of the Pouto community.

To our kura, Frenchie was a familiar and deeply valued figure. He represented the enduring whakapapa and history of this place, reminding us and our tamariki of the strength of our community and the importance of holding fast to our identity, our tikanga, and our connection to the whenua.

He held a special place in his heart for the children of our kura, always referring to them as his mokopuna and including our tamariki in community events, knowing they are the future carriers of our stories, our tikanga, and our whenua. He blessed our pou and our school buildings, took our students planting throughout the rohe, and brought his Environs team to our kura to share their knowledge with our tamariki, teaching them about the natural world.

No matter how busy he was serving the wider community, he never forgot our kura. His generosity, guidance and commitment to our children will always be remembered with deep gratitude and aroha.

The Pouto School community extends our heartfelt aroha and condolences to Melissa, his tamariki and mokopuna, his siblings, and the wider whānau of Te Uri o Hau and Ngāti Whātua at this time of loss.

E te rangatira, e te pou o tō tātou hapori, haere, haere, haere atu rā.
Moe mai rā i roto i te rangimārie.
