Port Chalmers Kindergarten Teaching and Learning Philosophy

The past and present knowledge shapes the future. Knowing this we involve our community, history of our place and the people that come here to support future learning. (Tangata whenuatanga - Contribution)

People are taonga. We will be responsive to the needs of whanau, building a relationship for the benefit of each child. (Whanaungata

nga - Relationships)

We celebrate the joy of being a child. Children will have fun here as they learn through play. (Ako - Wellbeing)

We support each individual to be curious, innovative, and creative; making discoveries about the world around them. (Wananga - Exploration)

The outdoor environment is valued as a learning space. We embrace nature and our place in it. (Manaakitanga - Belonging)

Kia ora e te whānau,
On Wednesday, we were lucky to welcome Libby from the art gallery. She shared a Picasso painting made with dots and read us a beautiful story about dots. Afterwards, the tamariki created a dot painting using bingo markers.

It was wonderful to see everyone joining in, making choices, exploring their creativity and contributing to our shared artwork. This experience reflected Te Whāriki, particularly Mana Aotūroa – Exploration and Mana Tangata – Contribution, as the tamariki explored, created and celebrated the value of each person’s contribution.

Our beautiful artwork reminds us that, just like a woven whāriki, every little dot and every little hand helps create something special together. 🎨❤️

Ngā mihi nui,
Port Chalmers Teaching Team

Kia ora everyone,

Here are some of the fun things our tamariki have been getting up to this week! 🌿

They have been exploring with clay, developing their fine motor skills through hands-on creative play. They’ve also been playing a variety of games that support their social skills, including learning about sharing, turn-taking and playing together.

The tamariki have also been learning how to sign some of the different animals we see in our natural environment and up at the Eco Sanctuary. 🐦🦎🌱

It’s been a lovely week full of learning, exploring and having fun together! 💚

Kia ora e te whānau,

Today we welcomed a very special visitor to kindy. We first heard the beautiful melodies of the bagpipes drifting through our outdoor environment, sparking the tamariki's curiosity as they eagerly discovered Sophie playing outside. Sophie then joined us inside to perform for the tamariki and share her bagpipes, giving everyone the opportunity to see and hear this unique instrument up close.

Experiences like these enrich our curriculum by fostering curiosity, a sense of belonging, and connections with our wider community, reflecting the aspirations of Te Whāriki. We are so grateful to Sophie for generously sharing her passion and creating such a memorable learning experience for our tamariki.

Ngā mihi nui, Sophie!

Kia ora e te whānau,

What a wonderful morning we had today! We were so lucky to welcome the tamariki from Port Chalmers School, who came over to share a story and spend some time playing with us. It was lovely to see everyone connecting, laughing, and enjoying each other's company.

We also had some very exciting arrivals today—our new spinning chairs! They were an instant favourite, bringing so much joy, laughter, and smiles to our tamariki.

These amazing chairs were purchased thanks to the incredible support from our pie fundraiser. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who bought pies, supported the fundraiser, and helped make this possible. Your generosity has made a real difference, and today we got to see that difference in action.

Ngā mihi nui for your ongoing support of our tamariki and our kindy❤️
