Waitangirua Kindergarten

Waitangirua Kindergarten High Quality Early Childhood Education Waitangirua Kindergarten is a large, progressive multi-cultural community. Kohanga Reo, Pacific Island language nests.

The ethnic mix is largely made up of representatives from all the Pacific Islands, as well as an Asian community. There is a strong Pacific Island/Maori culture active in the community with dance groups, carving schools, cultural performance groups, church groups and other educational groups, e.g. The programme is based on teachers providing support for children s learning interests, a varied rang

e of experiences are provided to follow these interests, this also involves the Whanau/Community. Teachers have established strong, positive and culturally-sensitive relationships with families and Whanau. This is reflected in their daily interactions with adults and children. The teaching programme is offered to the children in four languages Maori, Samoan, Cook Island and Tokelauan. At times, Cultural Aides work alongside the Teaching team, building on children's language skills and knowledge.

Kia ora Whānau,

Here at our Kindergarten, we value opportunities for tamariki to challenge themselves, build confidence, and strengthen their tinana.

With many choices in our environment, tamariki are encouraged to explore, take safe risks, practise new skills, and discover what their bodies can do at their own pace.

Valuing lototele/courage and pākiki/curiosity, kaiako support tamariki to have a go, persevere, and celebrate their achievements. Just look at those superhero jump poses!

Kia ora e te whānau,
Our tamariki have been showing increasing interest in creating with the Lego blocks recently. They are not only extending their creative skills as they make their structures but it is also a wonderful opportunity to practice their fine motor skills. They show pride in their Mahi as they share their Lego accomplishments with us - Ka rawe!

Kia ora Whānau,

The relationships we build here at our kindergarten are at the heart of everything we do.

When children feel safe, valued, and connected, they are more confident to explore, learn, ask questions, and grow. Strong, trusting relationships between tamariki, whānau, and ngā kaiako create a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

We are grateful for the meaningful relationships we share with our tamariki, their whānau, and one another. Together, we create a place where every child feels seen, heard, valued, and supported to reach their full potential.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Matariki Whānau evening last night. It was so special to see so many of you come together to celebrate Matariki, share in the activities, and enjoy time with one another. Seeing our kindy community connecting, laughing, and creating memories made the evening truly special.We feel so grateful to be part of such a caring and connected community.

Kia ora e te whānau,
Our tamariki have had fun pushing themselves physically when using the scooter boards (or as they call them skateboards) while at kindergarten this week. Not only does it take good physical skills and eye hand coordination to manoeuvre these boards but it also takes the Lototele/courage to give it a go, particularly on our downhill slopes. It was also wonderful seeing the value ofTautoko play out as they supported and encouraged each other to try more daring moves. We were impressed with how many children were keen to push themselves out of their comfort zone - Ka rawe!

Kia Ora e te whānau,

With the sun shining brightly today, ngā kaiako decided to make the most of the opportunity and brought out the carpentry table for the tamariki to explore and enjoy.

To support safe tool use, Kaiako Laura firstly drew a chalk line around the area and labelled it the "Construction Zone". This helped our tamariki understand the importance of boundaries and safety when using real tools. Some tamariki also chose to wear protective gear and hi-vis vests as they worked.

Children eagerly engaged in sawing pieces of wood, hammering nails into logs, and carefully screwing screws into timber. Throughout the experience, they showed concentration, perseverance, and growing confidence as they learned how to use tools safely and purposefully.

Carpentry provides rich opportunities for developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, problem-solving skills, and risk assessment. It was wonderful to see tamariki taking pride in their efforts, persisting with challenges, and experiencing the satisfaction that comes from mastering new skills. What a great way to spend a sunny day!

“E au le ina'ilau a tama'iti.” – Even children can achieve great things.

As we conclude our Samoan Language Week celebrations, we spent the day immersed in culture, connection, and service. Tamariki proudly wore their cultural attire, explored Samoan artefacts shared by our kaiako during mat time, and helped prepare for our shared lunch. Through these experiences, our tamariki have deepened their understanding of Samoan culture, while our Samoan children have had meaningful opportunities to reconnect with their heritage and celebrate who they are.

Today was a beautiful reflection of tautua (service). Our tamariki demonstrated this through helping to prepare and share kai, supporting one another during daily routines, and generously bringing in extra cultural clothing so others could participate and feel included. These acts of kindness remind us that even the smallest contributions can make a meaningful difference.

This proverb reminds us that children are capable of achieving great things when they are nurtured, encouraged, and given opportunities to contribute. We are incredibly grateful to be part of a community that values service, supports one another, and works together to accomplish great things.

A wonderful celebration and a fitting end to a special week.

🇼🇸 MANUIA LE VAIASO O LE GAGANA SAMOA 🇼🇸

The theme for this year is “E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu'u” — From the high mountains are the blessings of the village.

Here at Waitangirua Kindergarten, we have kicked off our celebrations by creating beautiful paintings using the stencil gifted to us, and our tamaiti have been busy designing magnificent ili. This theme is a beautiful reminder that our tamaiti are our greatest blessings — those we continue to nurture, teach, and care for each day.

In Samoan culture, the mountains symbolise our faith that keeps us grounded, while our aiga remind us of our humble beginnings and the importance of staying connected to our roots.

In honour of Samoan Language Week, we warmly welcome our Kindy aiga to join us this Friday for a shared lunch with the tamaiti. As a community, we continue to uplift and celebrate all cultures and traditions, so please feel free to bring a dish that reflects you, your culture, and your heritage to share with us all.
