Awatea Kindergarten

Awatea Kindergarten High Quality Early Childhood Education The Kindergarten was opened in 1980.

The community is well serviced, with local rail and bus services and a
shopping centre and we are situated right next to the local school. The community is a multicultural one with families with Samoan, Maori,
European and other Pacific and Asian cultures represented here. The indoor was completely remodeled at the beginning of 2010 and is a
spacious child friendly environment. There is lots of room for a whānau
area and space for families to spend time together.

Challenge, curiosity & Manawanui at Awatea

We’ve been setting up our environment in new ways to create provocations for challenge, curiosity and problem solving.

The rope swing is a lot harder than it looks! Tamariki explored balance, coordination and different ways to make the swing work, learning through trial and error and watching each other.

There was plenty of determination, creative problem solving and grit — Manawanui in action!

At Awatea, we love creating opportunities for tamariki to challenge themselves, persevere and discover, “I can figure this out!”

Ngā mihi o te Tau Hou Māori! Happy Māori New Year to all our whānau. ✨

What an incredible evening celebrating Matariki together as our Awatea community! It was wonderful to see such an amazing turnout as whānau came together to enjoy a fun-filled disco, share a delicious feast, and celebrate alongside one another.

Matariki is a special time to remember those who have passed, reflect on the year that has been, and look ahead with hope for the future. It was heartwarming to see our community connecting, laughing, dancing, and creating new memories together.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so special. We are grateful to be part of such a supportive and connected Awatea whānau.

A frosty start to the day brought so many opportunities for wonder and discovery at Awatea Kindergarten! ❄️

Our tamariki explored the magic of winter by crunching across frosted grass, cracking thin sheets of ice, scraping frost from different surfaces, and noticing how it felt in their hands. As the morning unfolded, they watched the sunshine slowly melt the frost and warm the world around them.

These simple moments of sensory exploration sparked curiosity, encouraged scientific thinking, and invited rich conversations as tamariki observed, questioned, and experienced the changing environment together. 💙

Talofa lava matua ma aiga,

At Awatea Kindergarten, we are currently celebrating Samoan Language Week and Samoa's Independence Day, which is celebrated on 1st of June. This year marks 64 years of Samoan Independence.

This year's theme is "E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu'u" (From the high mountains are the blessings of the village), celebrating the strength, wisdom, and blessings that come from our families, communities, and cultural heritage.

Our tamaiti (children) have been learning simple Samoan greetings, phrases, and everyday instructions while exploring Samoan culture. They have enjoyed engaging with stories, puzzles, games, and learning about the colours of the Samoan flag, with some creating their own unique flag designs.

It has been wonderful to see our Samoan tamariki actively participating and supporting Language Week by contributing their ideas and sharing their knowledge of their language, culture, and identity with their friends.

A special highlight was enjoying delicious panikeke, a traditional Samoan treat that many of our tamariki loved.
