Mahi tahi in action!

We learnt how to play ping pong! We used books as bats to begin with, and then proper ping pong bats. We all worked together to carry the art table outside for more room, and then waited patiently for our turn, cheering our friends as they got a point. After the games finished, we showed how great we are with mahi tahi and carried the table inside again. It was heavy, and the legs fell off! But we worked together to get the job done.

We are developing the ability to cooperate with others by sharing, taking turns, working together and making positive contributions to group learning experiences. (Te Whāriki - Mana Tangata / Contribution)

Kia orāna e te 'enua - kia mataora te Vaiaso o te Reo Māori Kuki Airani!
Hello all - Happy Cook Islands Māori Language Week!

We have been celebrating with music and greetings! We made 'ei katu who proudly wore them: someone even wore theirs all day when they went home and wore it back to kindy the next day too!
On those freezing icy days we tuned in to Tekiwanui on YouTube and watched our friends from Nuanua and Katoa Kindergartens perform their amazing dances on stage. Today we watched the students from Aotea College perform, and we tried to copy their incredible dance moves. We recognised (we thought we recognised) our whānau in the group.
We made flags and talked about the stars and colours of the Cook Island flag.

🔈 🙋‍♀️Have your say! Oppose funding cuts for Kindergartens by 6 August, 5pm.

A government appointed funding review suggests less money for kindergartens and more taxpayer money going to private profit-oriented services.

This would mean Kindergartens will be forced to charge more, and some children will miss out completely on early childhood education.

🗓️ Have your say by making a submission before 6 August, when the consultation closes.

Your submissions can simply be describing what effect the rising cost of Kindergartens would have on you and your whānau. Link to submit in the comments below!

Kia ora e te whānau,
Within our community of learners kaiako support tamariki to grow their respect for others and identify and accept another point of view. We provide learning opportunities which are equitable irrespective of gender, ability, age ethnicity and background. We support our tamariki to develop a positive learner identity and a realistic perception of themselves as being able to acquire new interests and capabilities by supporting them throughout each day to grow as confident and competent learners who actively explore their world. We love to see photos and stories sharing with us what is happening at home, what's important to your whānau, your culture, your home language and identity.

This is a critical time for early childhood education. After months of upheaval and change in the sector, we now have another report proposing more changes, this time to funding.

The consultation document that forms part of the government’s review of ECE, being undertaken by the ministerial appointed funding review group, has been released.

Kindergartens Aotearoa is concerned that it ignores the fundamental issue: the level of funding is simply not enough, and it hasn't kept pace with rising costs.

The options presented mean shifting money around rather than increasing it, with teacher qualifications, pay and conditions treated as areas where trade-offs can be made. These factors are fundamental to high quality provision, and undermining them would be devastating for the over 180,000 babies, toddlers and young children attending teacher-led ECE services each day.

We are making Hulk Hands for our wall. One way to help find our calm is to do "heavy mahi" - such as pushing hard into a wall just like the Incredible Hulk might do. This helps us calm our emotions because it acts like a reset button for our nervous systems. It helps us feel grounded and safe, it helps our nervous system settle and focus, and is a great way to help us self-regulate our big emotions.

We are learning to manage ourselves and express our feelings and needs (te whakahua whakaaro)
