Discovery Kindergarten

Discovery Kindergarten High Quality Early Childhood Education The kindergarten serves the self-contained, suburban community of Whitby. These show both group and individual learning.

The kindergarten children go on to attend four primary schools in the area. The kindergarten has a close reciprocal relationship with Discovery School next door and a developing relationship with Postgate School. There is a local library, several parks and reserves, a shopping mall and medical and dental services. The community is very supportive of Kindergarten and teachers. The kindergarten envi

ronment is planted with attractive mature natives. It has gently sloping grounds which present opportunities for children to learn to negotiate gradients in a safe environment. We have permission from the school to use its field, and we often do this. There is a large covered sandpit and a large deck. We are a well resourced kindergarten and provide children with a variety of equipment to allow for development in all areas of the curriculum. The programme is soundly based on the children’s interests with children identifying these interests and supporting them by providing resources and engaging children in conversation to support their learning to deepen their developing understanding. The progression and development of these interests are placed on our planning walls within the centre. These stories are also placed in the child’s profile book, and on Storypark, which is continuously being updated with the latest stories and is available at all time for whānau to read. TERM DATES can be found via https://www.wmkindergartens.org.nz

Today, we welcomed Chandra from Enviroschools to Discovery Kindy. She visited to share her kaupapa about being kaitiaki of our environment and minimising waste.

Together, we carried out a rubbish audit and extended our learning about how we can recycle, repurpose, and reuse materials at kindergarten. The tamariki enjoyed putting on special gloves and helping Chandra sort items into different categories. We then discussed what we had discovered during mat time, sharing our ideas about reducing waste and caring for our environment.

Thank you, Chandra, and Enviroschools, for providing us with such valuable resources, guidance, and support. We appreciate the opportunity to strengthen our understanding of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

This week tamariki (children) explored using shaving foam and peita (paint) to create some marble-patterned Easter decorations; swirling the peita (paint) and foam before pressing in the pukapuka (paper) and scraping off the excess.

Using unconventional materials in toi (art) fosters creative thinking; encouraging tamariki (children) to consider alternative uses for all kinds of resources, like using milk bottle tops to make mosaics, or using leaves instead of paintbrushes!

We wish you all a hoppy Easter! 🐰
