Te Matau a Māui Waka Hourua raises sails in remembrance. An amazing sight to see this mark of respect from one of the giants of the sea to those who lost their lives. May there be peace in the world.

Proud of the waka and crew who shared knowledge and taonga with the Marlborough area in the recent Te Hau Komaru Festival. Here you see Te Matau a Maui departing the festival she will return home to Ahuriri (Napier). Our families are aboard the canoes so we are always eagle eyed over their travel but we know the skippers, crew and canoe are highly skilled. Safe sailing Te Matau - Eo! https://www.facebook.com/tematauamaui/videos/777094354505439

Build tools to share knowledge.

Great to see this mini rig at Te Hau Komaru Festival. Glad we could help Jack build it and support Te Hau Komaru even from Matangirua Wānanga in Uawa. We hear you’ll be able to see it at other kaupapa around the country including at Te Papa. If I get time I might have to build a small one for our trainings. Good learnings for winter when can’t get out on the water.

From cyclone damaged to restored. You don’t realise how much of a toll it takes on a community and a canoe/ crew until you spend time with them. Uawa/ Tairāwhiti/ Kahungunu took it hard. Greatest respect to these waka crews who came together from across many points of the same ocean to rebuild, revive, spend time, heal. And strengthened relationships, canoes and people. Hera, Kush, Wayne, Tere Hauiti crew you refused to be defeated despite the massive challenges you were thrown. Seeing the damage, hearing the efforts to restore was humbling. you came when asked to help. It was my pleasure to give whatever I could too. And you did it. See everyone out there when we do doing what is in our DNA. AI - ancestor intelligence . See you on the horizon - Misky

Mana!

4 of the 6 waka hourua in Aotearoa have arrived safely in Te Tai Aorere, Te Tau Ihu o te waka a Maui, Kaiteretere, to attend the Te Hau Komaru National Waka Hourua Festival.

The waka are:
▪️Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti
▪️Te Matau a Māui Waka Hourua
▪️Hinemoana Te Toki Voyaging Trust - Waka Hourua
▪️ Tairawhiti Waka and
Local waka and waka ama.

A rare and amazing sight to see this many waka hourua sail in at one time. A sight not seen for a long time in this area. And acknowledging fellow waka Te Aurere who is undergoing renovations in the far North and Haunui waka who is in Auckland but represented by sister Hinemoana.

The waka hourua are in the Nelson region for the next two weeks as part of the Festival

If you’re in the area, watch social media and get along to the public events and workshops to meet and hear from some of the most respected navigators, skippers and crews of waka hourua in the Pacific. Link here: https://www.facebook.com/tehaukomaru?mibextid=kFxxJD

Like everyone we are thrilled the waka and crew have arrived safely and are able to share these taonga and mātauranga with the people and communities of Te Tau Ihu. Our congratulations to waka leadership for guiding kaupapa hourua to grow and to mana whenua, hosts and all supporters for making this a reality. E’o!
