🌟 CONGRATULATIONS AVA! 🌟

We are incredibly proud to share some very exciting news about our wonderful Year 8 student, Ava Sciascia, who has been awarded the Evergreen Foundation Scholarship to attend Iona College in 2027! 🎉💚

This is a significant achievement. The Evergreen Foundation Scholarship, offered in partnership with Iona College, supports a rural Hawke’s Bay or East Coast student entering Year 9 by contributing towards their **boarding fees for the duration of their time at Iona College. **

Ava is such a deserving recipient. She consistently demonstrates the values we hold so highly at Pōrangahau School. ❤️

🌿 Manaakitanga – Ava shows genuine kindness, care and respect for everyone around her. She looks out for her classmates and is always willing to lend a helping hand.

🌿 Tuakana–Teina – Ava is a wonderful role model for our younger tamariki, generously giving her time to support, encourage and help them.

🌿 Rangatiratanga – Ava works hard, gives everything a go and strives to do her very best in all that she does. She has the confidence to ask for help when she needs it, willingly takes on responsibilities and is always one of the first to offer her help with jobs around our kura.

Most importantly, Ava’s kindness shines through in everything she does. 💕

Ava, we are so incredibly proud of you! This scholarship is a wonderful recognition of the amazing young person you are and the potential others can clearly see in you.

What an exciting opportunity and next chapter ahead! Iona College is very lucky to be gaining you in 2027. 🌟

Ka mau te wehi, Ava! Congratulations from all of us at Pōrangahau School! 💚🎉

♻️🌿 Zero Waste creativity in action! 🌿♻️

As part of our Zero Waste Education lesson with Neen today, our Taurekaitai tamariki were challenged to turn waste items into something useful or creative — and they came up with some fantastic ideas! 💡👏

💧 Beauden used plastic bottles and a straw to create a pot-plant watering vessel for his mum.
🌱 Oliver used a waste bottle and hose to design a vessel that could provide oxygen while under water .
⛵ Oscar and Mason put their construction skills to work creating boats.

🔭 Ngaira got creative too, making a very cool pair of binoculars from waste materials!

🤖 And James transformed his waste materials into a very cool robot!

Ka rawe, tamariki! We loved seeing your creativity, problem-solving and construction skills in action — all while learning that our “waste” can often be reused and given a whole new purpose. ♻️💚

Great ideas and awesome mahi, Taurekaitai! 🌟

Kia ora whānau, just wanted to share a lovely little moment from today and give a big shout-out to our awesome Sasuke! 🥰

On his bike ride home, Sasuke noticed that one of our neighbours’ rubbish bins had blown over. Instead of just riding past, he stopped, picked up the rubbish and helped tidy it all up. 💛👏

A big shout-out also to our lovely staff member Tracy, who saw what was happening and stopped to lend a hand too.

What a wonderful example of manaakitanga — showing kindness, care and respect for others and our community. 🌿💕

Sasuke and Tracy, you are both awesome! We are very proud of you. 🥰👏

💦 Wonderful Water Learning! 💦

Today we welcomed Neen from Zero Waste into school to work with our tamariki and teach us all about zero waste . Te Paerahi are focusing on learning about one of our planet’s most precious resources — water! 🌏💧

Did you know that around 71% of our planet is covered in water? But here’s the amazing part… 😱

🌊 97% is salt water in our oceans
🧊 2% is locked in ice or trapped deep underground
💧 That leaves only around 1% available as fresh water for us to use!

Our tamariki learnt some really important messages about why we need to value, protect and look after our water — a great connection to kaitiakitanga and caring for Papatūānuku. 🌿🌏

Ngā mihi nui, Neen, for coming to share your knowledge with us and helping our tamariki understand how precious every drop really is! 💦💙

As part of our annual Eastern Zone Cross Country with Flemington School, we take a moment to honour Bronson James Hutcheson.

Bronson was known to those who loved him as a very special boy. Tragically, on 4 November 1993, Bronson passed away while training for cross country at school. He was just five years old.

Each year, the Bronson Memorial Trophy is awarded to the highest-placed five-year-old from Pōrangahau School, keeping Bronson’s memory alive through something he loved.

Your smiling face will always shine
Through the beauty of the rainbow
Across the heavens.

Te toro o te āniwaniwa
I runga i te rangi
Ka whakaahua mai
Te ātaahua o tō kanohi
Kia kore koe e wareware.

This year, we are incredibly proud to celebrate our Bronson Memorial Cup winner Ellie Sciascia. 🌈🏆

It is so special to see Bronson’s memory continue to be honoured by our tamariki each year.

Ka mau te wehi, tamariki mā! ❤️
