Two minutes of standing tall before you walk into a room can change how confident you actually feel — not just how you look.

This is one of the most-watched TED talks ever, and it's a good one to have in your back pocket before an interview, a meeting, or a speech.

Who's got a big moment coming up this week? 🙋

(NOTE: Some of the findings presented in this talk have been referenced in an ongoing debate among social scientists about robustness and reproducibility. Read "Corrections & Updates" below for more details as well as Amy Cuddy's response.) Body language affects how others see us, but it may also ch...

If you've got something to say and only thirty seconds to say it — a toast, a quick update, an answer in a meeting — try the "three things" trick.
Decide on exactly three points before you open your mouth.
Not five, not one. Three is enough to sound prepared and short enough to actually remember.

Save this one for your next work meeting

Quick one for a Thursday: what's a word or phrase you say way too often? For some of our members it's "basically" — for one, it's "look" (he starts almost every sentence with it and has no idea). We notice this stuff in Toastmasters more than anywhere else.

One of our members told us recently that the hardest speech she ever gave wasn't at a big event — it was a two-minute update in a work meeting, the week before she joined us. She said, "I used to rehearse things like that in the car for twenty minutes." She still remembers her first Toastmasters speech clearly. She doesn't remember being nervous about the last five.

Ever rehearsed something in the car? You're not alone — comment below.

Confidence tip:
Next time you feel nervous before speaking up — in a meeting, on the phone, anywhere — try this. Say the first sentence out loud in your head before you say it out loud to anyone else. Just the first one. The rest tends to follow. It's a small trick, but it's the one most of our members say they still use years later.

What's your go-to trick for the first-sentence nerves? Tell us below.

"Winter is here but Pokeno Toastmasters was anything but cold last Thursday.
Heaters on, speeches that warmed the room, and an impromptu session that kept the energy going. Great to see a first-time guest join us too.

Our next meeting is Thursday 9 July — one-off change of venue this time.
We'll be at the Pokeno CBD Café & Bar, 7 Selby Street, with an earlier start at 6:30pm. It's an intimate setting so numbers are limited.

Free to come along as a guest. Thinking about joining us?

Drop a comment below — we'd love to know."
