Ōtūmoetai Intermediate had fantastic results and a very cultural day out at the Chinese Language Week competition held at Tauranga Intermediate on Thursday 3rd September.
36 of our students worked very hard with Miss Li (our Mandarin tutor) to put together speeches in Mandarin or about Chinese culture, create research boards about an aspect of Chinese culture, do calligraphy, or art representing friendship between Aotearoa and China. Some keen students even entered more than one category.
Miss Li and Mrs. Wain were very proud of the high standard of work produced. The students made us even prouder on the day by representing our kura so well on our visit to Tauranga Intermediate. We were also treated to performances where Harper Stull, who will be off to China this week to represent OIS in a global competition, gracefully performed her dance item. Then Miss Li shocked us all with her singing talent, singing a Chinese song. Miss Li, we had no idea you could sing like that!

Our Hip Hop dancers performed last night and were incredible! All of their hard work and dedication showed in their performance. Although we didn't place this year, we had the best day and the best thing was that we could share it with our friends.

Our AIMS 3x3 basketball teams played their hearts out this weekend and achieved some great results.
The team consisting of Nik, Harry, Luke, Theo, and Jacob won their last game against Kati Kati in a nail biter, finishing 11th out of 40 teams.
Our team with Blair, Xavi, Billy, Jesse, and Tate lost their last game by one point to St Peter’s Cambridge, to finish a very credible 6th.
Nik received a medal for the most improved, and Blair received a medal for his great defence, and assists.
These boys were a pleasure to coach, and they represented OIS with pride.

🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ What an epic day at the AIMS Games 2026 Cross Country!

We had 20 students compete today in the individual races, showing incredible determination, resilience and team spirit.

🌟 A special congratulations to Harley Nicholas, who was outstanding in the Year 7 Boys individual race, finishing 2nd with an impressive time of 10:48.64! We are so proud of you, Harley! 🥈👏

Our Year 7 Boys team also performed brilliantly, getting 3rd in the teams event. Congratulations to Harley Nicholas, Mateo Baz and Ben Watson on an incredible result! 🥉💪

We also had Xzavien Downing competing in the Adapted Athletes race. Xzavien was fortunate to have one of our past students, Sam Ruthe, alongside him as his guide. It was fantastic to see the support, and encouragement from our OIS students for Xzavien who came in 5th place.

We then took on the 12 km relay, facing some incredibly tough competition. Our OIS team fought hard from start to finish, showing determination, teamwork and plenty of heart—and finished the day with a fantastic bronze medal! 🥉

What a day for our athletes! We are incredibly proud of every single student who represented OIS today. Your effort, sportsmanship and never-give-up attitude made us proud.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our athletes and a very special shout-out to Mrs Chappell, who has dedicated the last few months to training and preparing the team.
