Paremata Kindergarten High Quality Early Childhood Education They are able to explore both the inside and outside learning environments and choose areas of interest to them.

At Paremata Kindergarten we are fortunate to be on the beach front and so have a lovely natural outdoor environment for the tamariki to explore. We place special importance on creating a welcoming environment and on building strong relationships with our tamariki, families and whānau. Paremata Kindergarten operates a free play programme, which is based on the interests of the tamariki, and provide

s a range of opportunities for tamariki to learn, explore and discover, gain knowledge, dispositions and skills and, of course, have fun. On Monday morning there is kapa haka, and on Tuesday we have library time where the tamariki are welcome to choose one of our books to take home to read. We are fortunate to have Gayle who is our administrative support in the office and, Kevin, our teacher aide, working with us throughout the week. The Teaching Team at Paremata Kindergarten is 100% qualified, with a diverse range of skills and interests that we are able to share with the tamariki. It is a privilege for us to be able to share in your child’s learning and to work alongside them as they continue their journey of lifelong learning.

The proposed changes to funding within Early Childhood Education (ECE) will have a wide-reaching effect on everyone who accesses ECE or works as a qualified registered teacher, especially those working in not-for-profit centers (such as kindergartens) or those who actively and intentional hire 100% qualified teachers.

What is clear is that education is not valued in the right way by the current government, with special focus on changing the ECE landscape despite research that supports just how vital education in the early years is!

The impact of these proposed changes will have a substantial effect on the fully qualified,fully registered teachers, some of us may lose our jobs - especially if they remove the funding provided for 100% qualified teachers, others could be paid minimum wage with the removal of ALL pay parity (so not just pay parity between private and public ECE, but the pay parity that kindergarten has with primary).

We have a world leading ECE Curriculum, yet it feels that we’re not worthy of being called teachers, our bachelor's degrees are not held in high regard, and we can simply be replaced by the untrained, unqualified and inexperienced.

This government believes that your children, your grandchildren, your great grandchildren and your mokopuna are not worthy of qualified teachers, or of sufficient funding to do our jobs.

This government and the funding review are not even looking at the mass amounts of profit that are being made by large private ECE companies in this country.

We love our jobs! We love TEACHING your tamariki, supporting & helping them grow into strong capable learners but if this government is elected again, it is highly possible that all of this will change, and quickly too.

You and your tamariki matter to us, and because of this we strongly encourage you to enrol to vote (and please vote), ask questions and talk to people about the impact this could have on your whānau and the people that matter to you.

Kia Orāna kotou kātoatoa
Recently we had the opportunity to have a week focus on celebrating Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki 'Airani. The focus for the week celebration is “Me kite koe i te tuatua i to’ou reo tupuna, e turanga rangatira tena nō’ou no te uki amuri atu" - With our language as our foundation, we will embrace the future.
We had the opportunity to look at some different whānau taonga brought in to share with us. There was a very precious mother of pearl shell and beautiful shell and seed 'ei.
We spent time listening and watching Kūki 'Airani drumming and dancing and had a go at dancing too. We practiced counting in te reo Māori Kūki 'Airani and singing the Welcome song. The tamariki had the opportunity to create 'ei katu and explore different Kūki 'Airani flowers.

We've had a busy week at Paremata Kindergarten, with Martin the Toymaker who came and worked with tamariki on Monday. Tamariki collaboratively worked together in making wooden cameras for kindergarten. Tamaiti got a chance to experience working at different stations with Martin's support in using hand drills, screwdrivers, and sanding blocks. Tamariki along with learning new skills also had opportunities to be a tuakana and ako (be learners and teachers) in this space and encouraged by Martin.

Then on Friday we experienced the puppet show - Bridget and Roger Sanders from Birdlife Productions Theatre Company, which was about a boy, Peter who with his grandmother made a birdbox for a ruru / morepork. The look of wonder and delight on tamariki faces was a real joy to witness.

At Paremata Kindergarten our teina ( younger tamariki) are supported by not just their kaiako, but by their tuakana (older tamariki) along with their peers, but we also notice ako – where our younger tamariki also support their tuakana, such as a younger sibling getting their older sibling their drink bottle. We encourage a whānau environment where tamariki feel a sense of belonging by getting to know whānau and what interests and strengths our tamariki bring with them. Along with lots of encouragement of manaakitanga and aroha.

Mānawatia a Matariki/Happy New Year

Wow, what an industrious and fun week we've had at kindergarten. We have been making ngā whetu/stars out of paper and clay, paper lanterns, peeling and chopping vegetables, blending the cooked hupa/soup, practicing of our ngā waiata/songs and mauharu ahi/fire safety, putting together the brazier, reading different Matariki stories and having a lot of fun with each other.

We hope that you enjoyed our Matariki evening. We had a lot of fun, enjoying yummy kai, especially the hupa, keeping warm around the fire and toasting a marshmallow or two, catching up with friends and meeting new whānau. We hoped you enjoyed our ngā waiata, the tamariki did an amazing job singing and doing the actions.

Kia ora e te whānau,
Throughout the term tamariki have an opportunity to explore the taiao right outside of kindergarten - for us it is the Pāuatahanui Inlet. We spend about an hour mindfully and joyfully in small groups of 10 tamariki and with whānau support searching for crabs and other creatures, looking at our local birds and learning about being a kaitiaki to this special place by caring for the creatures and picking up rubbish.

Kia ora tātou
Our tamariki have been learning about what showing each other manaaki looks like in their play. Kaiako have been praise bombing manaaki moments throughout the day at kindergarten.
We are focusing on using kind words, safe hands, asking for a turn, waiting for a turn, greeting each other, helping each other, having fun together, including others in their play and laughing together.
We have created a photo wall inside kindergarten to celebrate our current intentional teaching.
