Washing Chairs — Learning Through Practical Life
A simple activity like washing chairs provides so many opportunities for learning! Our tamariki are building independence, concentration, coordination and confidence as they carefully scrub, wipe and clean their chairs.
Practical Life activities are an important part of the Montessori environment, giving children meaningful, real-life experiences while developing fine and gross motor skills. They are learning to care for their environment, take responsibility for their belongings and take pride in their work.
And of course… there’s something very satisfying about seeing a clean chair at the end!

Ngā Tae o Te Taiao – The Colours of Nature

Here we can see Emmy exploring a beautiful matching activity based on ngā tae o te taiao – the colours of nature.

Emmy is matching the colours and plants using pukapuka | book pictures and word cards, making connections between the natural world, visual information and written language.

This experience is an adaptation of the Montessori 3-part cards, supporting vocabulary development, visual discrimination, concentration, matching skills and early literacy in a meaningful, hands-on way.

We love seeing Montessori principles woven together with te reo Māori and our children’s natural environment, creating opportunities for learning that are purposeful, engaging and connected to the world around them.

Magic maker Monday!
Hi I am Shirley
I have worked in the education sector for 28 years. The first 16 as a teacher aid in a primary school. I completed my Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood) degree in 2014 and worked with children aged 3-5 years old in kindergartens for 7 years in Timaru, before moving to Christchurch in 2021. I joined Harewood Road Montessori at the end of 2021. I have a special interest in visual arts and literacy.

Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful men out there helping to nurture, guide and grow the beautiful tamariki we see each day. ❤️

Your love, support, encouragement and presence make such a special difference in their lives. We hope you all have a wonderful day celebrating the amazing dads, grandads, uncles and father figures who help our tamariki grow.

Sounds, Letters & Discovery!

Our tamariki have been busy exploring the Montessori Sandpaper Letters, building those important early connections between sounds and symbols.

Using their fingers to trace the letters while saying the sound helps children develop muscle memory and strengthen their understanding of letter-sound relationships. We then take the learning one step further by matching real objects to the sounds they hear — making literacy meaningful, hands-on and fun!

This beautiful Montessori work supports phonological awareness, concentration, language development, fine motor skills and early literacy while allowing children to learn at their own pace.

We love watching those little lightbulb moments when a child realises, “I know that sound!”

Balloon Toss Fun!
Throwing a balloon through a hoop is a fun way for children to develop hand-eye coordination, concentration, aiming and gross motor skills.
As they judge distance, control their movements and adjust their throws, children are building body awareness and confidence — all while having lots of fun!
