Cyclone Gabrielle Update 3:30pm Sunday February 12, 2023
⚠️ Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle is continuing to move towards the Bay of Plenty!
The worst of the weather is due to start arriving tomorrow, with storm surges, rain, and wind across the region. Large sea swells of up to 6-8 metres, severe gale force winds of up to 140km/h and heavy rain are expected across the region. https://www.facebook.com/MetService
🌊 Storm surge – storm surges can cause coastal inundation, especially when timed with high tide and large waves. All our coastline is at risk of storm surges, however, coastal areas that are likely to be hit hardest are Whakatāne, West End, Ōhope, Ōhiwa, Waihī Beach and coastal communities along SH35.
Wind and rain – as you all know much of our region is sodden and we have more wind and rain on the way. This can cause slips, trees to fall and surface flooding.
How can I prepare?
• Does your family have a plan if you need to evacuate? If you do need to evacuate don’t forget to take the pets, your meds and your emergency supplies
• Tie down the trampoline/put the wheely bins in the garage (decrease the number of projectiles around your properties)
• Plan to stay home tomorrow if you can. It’s a good time to refresh those COVID working from home skills, but if you do need to travel take is slow and remember don’t drive through flood waters

We love getting out and about again after so long of not being able to do too much socially. Wednesdays we are either at Playgroup or Jitterbugs and Thursdays you can find us at Mainly Music.

Making a Rewana Bread for Matariki from the bug. I went to workshop earlier in the month and we all started our bug and we went through the process of feeding and then baking our bread. The children had a great time taking turns and watching it develop. Fair to say I'm not much of a baker but the process was fun to do and the children enjoyed being involved each day.

We have been focusing on traffic safety this week. We have discussed what to do when we cross the road, and when we are in the car both as the driver and as a passenger. This is a great continuation of last week and the week before when we were acting out going on a bus in the back yard as we sat on the chairs and went to various places.

You have all done so well telling we what each traffic light colour means and knowing what order they go in on the lights.

Each time we go out to a music group or playgroup we discuss how we get out of the car and walking safely to the building in case any cars come. We also know that our seatbelts must be buckled up before we take off.

We have read lots of Transport stories including the story 'Roadworks' which the children thoroughly love.
