Today, across our Future Focus centres, we’re celebrating Father’s Day and all the incredible men who hold such an important place in the lives of our tamariki 🤎

The dads, stepdads, grandads, uncles, brothers, father figures and special people who show up, love fiercely, teach, protect, play, encourage and help shape our little people into who they’re becoming.

We’ve got some pretty special Father’s Day celebrations happening across our centres today, and we cannot wait to share all of the beautiful moments with our whānau. But for now, we’re taking a little trip through the archives and sharing some of our favourite photos of the epic dads and father figures who make up our Future Focus whānau 🥹🤎

We also know that Father’s Day can look and feel very different from one whānau to the next.

So today, we’re sending some extra awhi to the mums and caregivers who carry both roles for their tamariki, to those raising little ones without a dad present in their lives, to the father figures who have stepped in and loved as their own, to those missing their dads, and to anyone navigating loss, absence or big feelings today 🫶🏽

We see you, we celebrate you, and we’re sending you a little extra awhi today! 🤎

Whānau comes in many different forms, and ultimately, today is about acknowledging the people who continue to show up, love deeply and be there for our tamariki!

To all of our wonderful dads, father figures, mums and caregivers doing double duty, and the special people filling that space with love, Happy Father’s Day from all of us at Future Focus! 🤎

Next in our journey through Te Whāriki is Mana Aotūroa | Exploration, and this is the strand that reminds us just how powerful curiosity can be.

For tamariki, exploring their world isn’t passive. They’re constantly observing, wondering, experimenting, moving, testing ideas and figuring things out.

It’s there when they build something, watch it fall and try a different way. When they climb a little higher and work out where to put their feet. When they investigate something they’ve discovered outside, pull something apart to see how it works, mix materials together just to see what happens, or turn an ordinary object into something completely different through imaginative play.

These moments allow tamariki to develop working theories about their world, strengthen their problem-solving and reasoning, challenge themselves physically and discover that their own curiosity can lead their learning.

The wondering, testing, changing, trying again and discovering IS the learning 🤎

Next in our journey through Te Whāriki is Mana Tangata | Contribution, and this strand is about so much more than simply “joining in.”

Mana Tangata recognises that every tamaiti brings something unique to the group. Their ideas, interests, strengths, perspectives and ways of participating all have a place.
You can see it when tamariki build something together and have to negotiate whose idea comes next. When they invite an e hoa into their play. When they offer help, share resources, contribute at mat time, navigate a disagreement or confidently show someone else how to do something they’ve mastered.

And importantly, contribution doesn’t have to look the same for every child. Some will confidently lead from the front, while others might observe first, contribute quietly or join when they feel ready. Their contribution is still valuable.

Through these everyday experiences, tamariki are developing the skills to learn with and alongside others, while also beginning to recognise something incredibly important about themselves:

“I am capable. My ideas matter. I have something to contribute.”

And at the same time, they’re learning that the ideas, strengths and voices of others matter too. 🤎

Next up in our journey through Te Whāriki is Mana Whenua | Belonging, a strand centred around tamariki knowing that they have a place, that they are connected to the people and world around them, and that their identity is valued.

For our tamariki, that sense of belonging is built in so many everyday ways. It’s seeing their whānau, culture and language reflected around them. Knowing the familiar rhythms and routines of their day. Having a place for their belongings. Being trusted to make choices and contribute their ideas. Exploring the community beyond our doors, and gradually learning to care for the spaces, resources and environment they share with others.

These experiences help connect home, ECE and the wider world, so our centres don’t just become somewhere tamariki go each day, they become somewhere familiar, meaningful and theirs. 🌱

Because Mana Whenua is knowing…

“I know this place.
I know these people.
I have a place here.” 🤎

Welcome to the first stop in our journey through Te Whāriki, Aotearoa New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum. 🌿🤎

Mana Atua is about supporting the health and wellbeing of tamariki, but as you swipe through, you’ll see that wellbeing in ECE reaches much further than simply being happy and healthy.

It’s feeling safe and secure in the arms of a trusted kaiako. Seeing your whānau, culture and identity reflected in the environment around you. Learning to recognise and navigate big emotions. Nourishing and moving your tinana. Developing independence through everyday routines. Looking after your belongings, your environment and, increasingly, the people around you.

These might look like small, ordinary moments in the day, but together they help tamariki develop the confidence and capability to care for themselves, express their feelings and needs, and keep themselves and others safe.

That’s the beauty of Te Whāriki, the curriculum isn’t separate from your tamariki’s day. It’s woven throughout it. 🌱

How much do you currently know about Te Whāriki? 📚🌿

Over the next week we’re going to take you on a journey through the five strands of Te Whāriki, Aotearoa New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum, showing you what they actually look like in practice for your tamariki.

You may have heard us talk about Mana Atua, Mana Whenua, Mana Tangata, Mana Reo or Mana Aotūroa before…but what do they mean? What are our kaiako looking for? And where is the learning in the everyday moments you see at ECE?

Across this mini video series, we’ll take you inside our Future Focus centres and use real moments with our tamariki to explore each strand. The way they build relationships and find their sense of belonging, to how they communicate, contribute, explore and develop confidence in themselves.

Our hope is that this series gives you a better understanding of the curriculum your tamariki experience every day in our centres with our incredible teams.
