Team Value Tuesday: Accountability

Accountability looks like a teacher setting up a provocation with real thought behind it before the children even arrive, resetting the space properly throughout the day and then still taking the time to set it up again at the end of the day.

It's the quiet work that happens before and after the good moments everyone sees. That's what your child gets here, people who take their word seriously, in the big things and the small ones.

Memorial Park playground made another appearance today, always a favourite. This time the kids spotted something new, Thomas the Tank Engine painted on one of the walls. Little moments of discovery like this are half the fun of getting out into the community.

Team Value Tuesday: Curiosity

Curiosity is a child asking “but why?” for the fifth time in a row, and one of our teachers crouching down to actually answer instead of brushing it off. It’s noticing when a child’s interest sparks and following it, even if it means throwing the day’s plan out the window.

It’s also who we hire and how we grow as a team. Our teachers are always asking questions, about a child’s interest, about their own practice, about how to do something better tomorrow than they did it today. That curiosity keeps us learning, and it’s exactly why we never settle for “this is just how we’ve always done it.”

This week some of our Tipa tamariki spent the day at one of our own children's family farm. Calves, pigs, horses, and a good look at the tractor, there was a lot to get through and so much fun to be had. 🐷 🐮 🐎

Days like this only happen because a family offers. If your whānau has a farm, a workplace, a hobby, or just something interesting the kids could come and see, we'd love to hear about it. This is how we get to show tamariki more of the world, and we love that we get provide these opportunities. 🚜 🚜

Massive thanks to the whānau who opened up their farm for the day. We all haven't stopped talking about it ❤️

This week we’re kicking off a series;

Team Values Tuesday!

First up: Integrity.

Integrity means doing the right thing, especially when nobody’s watching. It’s a individual owning a mistake instead of brushing it aside. It’s being honest with a parent even when the easy thing would be to say nothing. It’s showing up the same way for a child at storytime as she does everywhere else, whether anyone’s noticing or not.

We hold ourselves to this every single day at The Blue Cottage, because trust isn’t built with big gestures. It’s built in the small, quiet moments nobody ever sees.

Kia ora,

Once a month, in each of our rooms, we learn a new waiata or rerenga kōrero (phrase) in te reo Māori. We often have whānau tell us that their tamariki are singing a waiata at home, but they don't know what it is, so they're not able to join in. We thought we'd share the waiata we're learning each month so you can join in at home if you'd like!

This month, we're learning a waiata about ngā atua Māori (the Māori gods). These are the words along with the actions in the video:

Ranginui
Tangaroa
Tāne Mahuta
Tāwhirimātea
Tūmatauenga
Haumia-tiketike
Rongomātāne
Rūaumoko
Papatūānuku
Hī!

💙💙

Our Matariki evenings at both Otūmoetai and Pāpāmoa were everything we hoped they’d be. Whānau came together to share a hangi, sing waiata, and celebrate the Māori New Year as one big extended family. ✨✨

This is who we are at The Blue Cottage. We don’t follow the Māori calendar because it’s a nice thing to do around Matariki, it’s woven into who we are all year.

Thank you to every single person who came and shared it with us, it meant more than you know. ❤️
