At kindy we have been celebrating Diwali by cooking Pakora, painting Diya, creating rangoli and enjoying time together.
A special thank you to our wonderful mums who supported us with the celebration and made it extra special by cooking some delicious food and doing henna with the children.

This year is extra special as it marks 50 years since the first Māori Language Week. The theme is Ake, ake, ake - A Forever language.

Today at NBK we celebrated World Bee Day 🐝🐝 as a proud EnviroSchool kindergarten we practice being kaitiaki everyday by taking care of our whole kindergarten environment. Recently we have been busy planting bulbs and flowers that will attract bees. We have been learning a lot of facts about bees with the tamariki sharing all of their knowledge as well.

For Waitangi Day this week, our tamariki explored the beautiful tradition of Manu Tukutuku (Māori kites) and created their own Manu Taratahi!

Our kite-making journey involved many exciting steps!

🎨 Drawing & Pastels – Using pastels, we designed our kites with kōwhaiwhai patterns, inspired by traditional Māori art.

🖌 Adding Dye – We painted over our patterns with dye, watching the colors blend and transform – a magical process that sparked curiosity!

🧵 Weaving the Kite – Carefully weaving strips of paper through our kite frames helped develop our fine motor skills, patience, and concentration.

Through this activity, our tamariki developed:
🔹 Raranga (weaving) skills – Strengthening hand-eye coordination and perseverance.
🔹 Understanding of Māori traditions – Learning how kites were used for storytelling and connection.
🔹 Creativity & Expression – Exploring Māori patterns and making each kite unique.

Our Manu Tukutuku is now proudly displayed, reminding us of our learning journey and the importance of Waitangi Day in celebrating Māori culture, history, and identity 💙❤️🖤
