We hope everyone has had a nice weekend. Sadly, we know that this is not the case with this horrible flu bug really hitting our community. For the second day in a row we have had over 100 of our awesome tamariki home unwell, this is a QUARTER of our school. We know of other schools in our city are also in the same situation and in some cases even worse.

To help keep our tamariki, staff, and wider whānau safe and healthy, we need everyone’s help to slow the spread.
Symptoms to watch out for:
* SUDDEN onset of high fever / chills
* Cough or sore throat
* Body aches & tiredness
* Runny nose or congestion
* Headache
* Loss of appetite or upset stomach

What you can do to help:
Keep tamariki home if unwell: If your child is showing any flu-like symptoms, please keep them at home to rest and recover.
When can they return? Tamariki should stay home until they are symptom-free for at least 24 hours without needing medication.
Practice good hygiene: Remind children to cover coughs/sneezes with their elbows and wash hands thoroughly with soap for 20 seconds.

Reporting Absences:
If your child is staying home, please notify the school office as usual via the HERO app or by calling 06 357 9946

It's been a very cold week. This week we have been hit even harder with winter illnesses than we have been in recent history. Twice this week we have had over 100 of our tamariki away.
As stated earlier in the week influenza A has been really making in impact within our whole school community.

📈 Our Attendance Update
This year, the Ministry of Education has set a clear goal for all schools across Aōtearoa: 90% regular attendance. This isn't just a number; it’s about ensuring our tamariki have the best possible shot at success.

This week at school, we achieved only 76%. However as mentioned above, we know that these winter bugs had a huge impact on this.

🍕 The Attendance Challenge
To help us reach those high standards, we have some awesome rewards on the table:
School-wide Goal: If we hit 92% as a whole school this week, we will hold a M***i Day!
Class Goal: Any class that achieves 98% attendance for the week wins a Pizza Lunch!

🏆 Shout-out to our winners!
Huge congratulations to Room 11 (Emily) who defied the odds and had a very impressive 95% attendance rate this week where some classes just scraped over the 50% mark.

The Ministry of Education’s focus on 90% and beyond reminds us that "every day is a learning day." Missing just one day a fortnight adds up to one term of missed schooling by the time a student is 16.

Let’s support our tamariki to be present, be engaged, and be part of the magic happening in the classroom. When they are here, they are learning!

This week we proudly celebrate Cook Islands Language Week 🇨🇰 — a time to honour and embrace the rich culture, language, and identity of the Cook Islands. Also this is an opportunity to acknowledge the tamariki and whānau with Cook Islands heritage within our kura.

🌴The 2026 theme for Cook Islands Māori Language Week is “Me kite koe i te tuatua i to’ou reo tupuna, e turanga rangatira tena nō’ou no te uki amuri atu" - With our language as our foundation, we will embrace the future.🌺🌊

Here at kura, we’ll be flying the Cook Islands flag all week with pride 🙌 and encouraging everyone to celebrate, learn, and share in the beauty of the Cook Islands Māori language and culture. 💚💬

It's been a very cold second week of the term. This week we have been hit really hard with winter illnesses really prevalent. We have had days this week with between 70-80 kids away sick 🤧.
Also influenza A is most definitely doing the grounds at a number of local schools including ours. We have had kids and staff affected sadly.

This week two classes have well and truly gone against the grain and gained 98% attendance. I huge congratulations to Room 13 (Matua Trent) and our legendary Room 2 (Kristin) for both winning a pizza lunch for getting 98%. Room 13 however gain the trophy as they have a bigger class.
