Year 9 student Tommy Hart has been in sublime racing form, winning two national titles earlier in the year: the ROK Cup and Rotax National series. Last weekend, at the Karting NZ Hall of Fame celebrations, he was awarded the Scott McLaughlin Youth Driver of the Year award. Through these achievements, Tommy has qualified to compete in two world events in October and November – the ROK Superfinal in South Garda, Italy, and the Rotax Grand Final in Portimao, Portugal. We wish Tommy all the best as he prepares for these events.

In this episode of Under the Grandstand, Hamish McKay sits down with PNBHS Old Boy Mark Cross for a conversation about leadership, perseverance, and the power of playing the long game.

Mark reflects on his years at Palmerston North Boys' High School, where he excelled academically, represented the school in rugby and tennis, and developed the foundations that would shape a remarkable career. From Massey University, he entered the world of international investment banking, working across Wellington, Sydney, and London before returning to New Zealand to build an impressive governance career, chairing and serving on the boards of some of the country's leading organisations.

Away from the boardroom, Mark discovered a passion for endurance sport. Despite admitting that school cross-country wasn't his favourite event, he went on to complete Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, compete in ultra-marathons through the Sahara and Gobi Deserts, and continually challenge himself well beyond his comfort zone.

Throughout the conversation, Mark shares the similarities between business and endurance sport, the importance of discipline, consistency, and resilience, and why success is rarely about short-term wins, it comes from committing to the long run.

Whether your goals are in business, sport, or life, this episode is a reminder that the biggest achievements are often built one step at a time.
