⚽. The second annual Kairanga v Ōpiki Senior Football Exchange took place on Thursday, with 22 of our Year 7–8 students travelling to Ōpiki on a cold and wet morning.
We arrived to a warm welcome, a beautifully marked pitch and the trophy proudly on display, with Ōpiki’s name on it as the 2025 champions. Once again, the trophy would be awarded to the school with the highest combined score across the girls’ and boys’ matches.
Our girls were first onto the field and found themselves two goals down early. However, they showed tremendous resilience, fighting back to 2–2 by halftime through excellent goals from Talia and Alexis, and some brilliant goalkeeping by Hannah. Ōpiki struck twice more early in the second half, demonstrating teamwork and skill. To our girls’ credit, they never gave up and continued battling until the final whistle. Girls’ final score: Kairanga 2–4 Ōpiki
That meant our boys needed to win by at least three goals to claim the trophy. Ōpiki made a flying start, scoring twice inside the opening three minutes. Our boys responded brilliantly, fighting back to make it 4–4 at halftime through goals from Nico, Luca and Carter. With everything on the line, our striker Nico was unable to return to the field, leaving us without a substitute for the second half. Every player had to dig deep and they certainly did! The Kairanga boys lifted another gear, producing an outstanding second-half performance and scoring six unanswered goals through superb teamwork, determination and some individual brilliance from Carter. Boys’ final score: Kairanga 10–4 Ōpiki
Combined score: Kairanga 12–8 Ōpiki! 🏆
Following the matches, our captains Carter and Hannah spoke well on behalf of their teams before proudly accepting the trophy. We then finished the day by sharing some kai with our wonderful hosts.
We were incredibly proud of all our Kairanga students. They showed skill, resilience, teamwork and a great attitude both on and off the pitch.
Thank you to our parent helpers and supporters, and to Ōpiki School for the generous hospitality. On a personal note, it was lovely to return to my old school and catch up with staff and students.
We look forward to seeing Ōpiki at Kairanga next year. 💙
