Academic staff, graduates now alumni and whānau make their way to Te Marae a Hine in The Square following Māori grad - Hato Paora College led the haka pōhiri ceremony today.

Over 400 students graduate this week in the Manawatū. Celebrate with them by joining in online. Whakapōtaetanga Māori - Māori Graduation in Palmerston North is now live. Mātakitaki mai.

It is with immense sadness that we learnt of the sudden loss of Rongomai Taiapa-Aporo, eldest son of our Kaipupuru Mauri of Te Pūtahi-a-Toi, Kōkā Julia Taiapa. Beloved tūngane of our Future Students colleague, Puawai Taiapa-Aporo and his eldest tuahine, Kitiana. Cherished son of Faipoto Aporo, of Rakahanga, Manihiki.

Rongomai held the role of Pouako at Te Wharekura o Mana Tamariki, was a graduate of Te Aho Tātairangi, was one of the lead tutors of Te Piringa Kapa Haka, was a leader of his Church and was a renowned and supremely talented musician, performer and composer. Our deepest thoughts and sympathy are with our māreikura, Kōkā Julia, Puawai, Kitiana, Faipoto and all of the tamariki and mokopuna at this time.

Arrived into Sydney (Eora/Guringai) this morning and while hustling to catch the connecting flight I looked up and, in Australia, saw the place names Tāmaki Makaurau, Tāhuna, Ōtautahi and Te Whānganui-a-Tara alongside the English names.

Isn’t that a thing! Australians can manage dual language references to our home places, but some political parties and their acolytes really do seem to find it an overwhelming struggle.

Gotta say, round one to Aussie. Let’s get those Te Reo Māori placename signs erected , yeah!
