Te Korio Children's Centre

An exciting change for us...

You may have seen some new signage and lots of things happening at the Centre over the past few months - well we can officially say - Hokowhitu Children’s Centre has been renamed as Te Korio Children’s Centre!

A little bit of background behind the name change...

"The Centre was previously located in Hokowhitu on, what was then, the Hokowhitu Massey campus, but relocated to the Batchelar Centre in 2014. As time has gone on it became apparent that the ‘Hokowhitu’ aspect of our name made it hard for families to find us and the Committee wanted a name that better reflected where and who we are. Working with Rangitāne they gave us the name ‘Te Korio’. It is the name of the current in the Manawatu river, and is known as the starting point for one’s journey on the river, as a safe haven for that journey, that it will uplift and propel you forward in your journey, and that the journey is everlasting. We see this aligning with our whānau, Committee and teachers commitment to the learning journey of our children."

LEST WE FORGET
It may just look like paint and paper art, but its so much more. Providing children with the opportunity to engage in ANZAC activities is more about experiencing the intangible concepts. Concepts of gratitude, remembrance and respect, while making poppies, painting leaves to create a wreath and crafting medals. Creating these and then seeing them displayed children can make a meaningful connection with the significance of these symbols and feel the importance of the sacrifice of those they represent.
